School me on E70s

Yes, it's scary how many of these handbrake units fail. In fact, I think there's more X5's on the road with broken handbrake modules than working ones.

I do, however, repair these. And they are nowhere near R15k if you buy a refurbished unit from me. Currently I'm doing around 5 units a week.

Hey G-man, curious...are these problematic just with the X5's or with other cars equipped with them as well?

Well, theyre mostly an issue on the E70 and E71. Ive only repaired once on an F01 and then a few on E65.

Interestingly, one if the big reasons for these failing is because guys dont retention the handbrake as the shoes age (like you would do on any other car). This causes the worm gear inside to run out of travel and thus seizing the handbrake unit.

my handbrake cable was cut because the car went into limp (or not drivable mode), so can you replace the cable on mine ?

The bowden cables are cut, because the handbrake units jam or seize up. Sure, you can replace the cable but itll just lock the brakes up again.

Best to have the unit repaired bud.

Really! I've heard of a couple of people trying to refurb / fix these unit with no success. Will spread the word.

I know on the LCI models they've even built in a easy mechanical hand brake release to counter the failure at inconvenient times.

Heh, I've invested a fair amount of research in being able to refurb these units properly and import most of the parts to repair. I even import the motors in bulk for these.

I've done around 50 units so far, with the only comebacks related directly to incorrect installation of the units; these are fickle things to install and correct tension settings are critical. I generally don't sell these to the public and insist that they are installed by a network of service shops around Gauteng with whom I have prior relationships.

I do keep stock of these and work on an exchange basis for the faulty units. I'll pm you a price.
