Sasol 10ppm better consumption but less oomph

Hi guys. So my first few tanks on F30 330D were with Sasol 10ppm. The last two tanks I have run total & engen 50ppm. I have now filled up again with the Sasol 10ppm.

My butt meter and smileage tells me that car feels better on the 50ppm but the electronics on the dash and ultimate distance covered is better on the 10ppm.

I have my own theory here that the car does in fact perform better on the 50ppm but the loss in consumption is mainly due to the higher sulphur content and the dpf having to regenerate more often which is where the fuel consumption is been lost.

Anybody else have the same opnions?

Sorry, a point off topic. But how long does a DPF last? Please describe the regeneration process?

We don't get the 10ppm at the coast. My observations when i have been up in Jozi long enough to put a second tank through the system is that by midway through the second tank, there is very little smoke at all from the zorst.

As regards consumption and performance, can't say i noticed and appreciable difference with either but then again, I expect a fall off in performance at the Reef compared with the coast.

Is the 10ppm a better choice in the long term for the internals of the motor or would BMWSA made changes to cater for the fuel quality when compared to the European / UK motors?

50ppm is better from my experience...works better with the SppedTec also...

10ppm feel faster but burns a lot quicker

Ok, so we all agree. 10ppm kak for power.

Just out of curiosity, Singh911, were you a member on the twincam forum at one stage?

Not in a BMW but been filling up with Sasol 10ppm in the wife's Evoque for a while now. At first, the turbo seemed to spoil much louder and butt meter reading was that it added some power but recently been feeling like the needle drops much quicker than normal. Perhaps because it's burning quicker? Will change to Engen 50ppm and test.

I'm about to fill after my 1st tank of 10ppm in the F30, mostly town & highway driving (so nothing like open road travel down to KZN) but I'm going to get 800kms out of the tank, (& a consumption of 6.8l/100km) TRACTOR FTW...
I'm going to test 5 tanks of 10ppm, then 5 tanks of 50ppm both from sasol, then do at least 3 other 5 tank tests on other 50ppm's.
hopefully I'll get some kind of measurable results on what the F30 prefers

I've filled up with both 50ppm and 10ppm on my Ford Ranger 2.2 and 3.0TDCi. 50ppm was always better - with consumption and performance. I have been using 50ppm for the last 4 years and I'm happy.

Here is my 2c.

Filled up with Sasol 10ppm, drove down to Durban, speed limit the whole way, driving with economy in mind. Average 7.3l/100km.

Filled up in Durban with Shell 50ppm, drove up to Jhb today. Didn't drive as economically but still stuck to speed limits, etc. Ended up with an average of 7.0l/100km.

So it would seem that with Shell 50ppm, I get much better economy than the Sasol.

For reference, last time I went down it was much warmer and averaged 6.3l/100km using BP 50ppm. On the way up using the same fuel, I got 6.8l/100km.

This is with my Hyundai Santa Fe btw.

Ok a bit of topic, i used to fill up at the Sasol down the road from my office mainly cos of the cash back via ABSA rewards and this filling up my Opel corsa 1.4 petrol.

I battle to hit the 550km mark on a full tank whereas if I fill up using Shell 95 I will hit the 600km mark even running the tank right down to achieve +-620km.

I also used fill up my wife's Mercedes C270cdi which is hard to really monitor cos she uses a tank a month and just fills as when she needs too as I don't use her car often.

There's is definitely a difference with Sasol fuel.

On my old e46 330d ive been alternating between caltex 50ppm and sasol 10ppm. I used to use 50ppm more often. Then started noticing the injectors making a noise. I first thought it was the lifters because at that time i was only doing town driving for a few weeks and kept low revs. Then did a few long trips and no change to the sound. By chance i stopped at one shell garage and found 500ppm. After almost two tanks and a long journey the injectors are almost silent again. The car has 214k km. 500ppm does give more black smoke but ill take that over a sick sounding engine.
