S54 tune

What has the experience been of those of us that have had there S54 on a dyno in terms of gains. I see from my build sheet that the car was delivered with what they call a "low compression engine" which for S54's is code for the fact that the tune has been wound back because of the poor quality of our fuel.

My thinking is that if one is prepared to run octane booster then there should be easy power on the table just by going back to non poor fuel country fuel calibration?

This is the option code on my build sheet

S858
Low compression engine

Newer VIN decoders change this to the below. So if we are prepared to use octane booster to get to 98 ron or so there must be good power on the table without going outside factory settings for countries with good fuel. Explains why I have seen people here talking about tunes giving a good 25hp on the S54. It was always there and the software is just a bit crippled. No miracles just more octane.

Well out of interest sake, the ability to tune the S54 engine is open source available on github in fact. I don't have a S54 engine so I can't say that I have tried this, but could be something to look at.

Lots of local tunes that have shown some decent gains with off the shelf tunes. Xcede has been the go to for most. If you're wanted a little more custom but also off the shelf tune with some more options such as shift lights, correct oil temperature on cluster (oem uses water temp), burble pops, M dynamic track mode etc, then I would suggest having a look at Build journal B spec tune. Expect anywhere from 15-20kw gain.

Lastly, if you have mods on your engine (pistons, cams, airbox) etc, then you will need a custom tune. Whether it be alpha N, MAF or CSL MAP sensor, I highly suggest Hassan at HTE performance tuning. He specializes in the S54 and has tuned many NA, Turbo and Supercharged S54 cars. He will tune your car remotely on the dyno and make a custom tune for you. You can expect around 50kw+ gain with these NA mods and tune.

Hope this helps.

Hi,

We have done plenty of these over the years, the most recent one done was for a forum member and we were able to achieve a gain on 18kw and 25nm on the wheels in Jhb.

Ok thank you. I expect the 18kw and 25nm involved octane booster?

If so that's cool. I run octane booster always. If it does involved octane booster then I expect you are just moving back to the non option S858 engine settings.

How much xcede? And done on a dyno?
