s50 fuel consumption

Hi guys

The guys with the s50 engined cars what's your fuel consumption? Mine is currently sitting on: 13.08 km/100L or 7.65km/L. I think it's running rich because of the strong smell of petrol after idling for about 30seconds.

I have an S50B30 sits on 12.8 with mainly city driving. Check the pipe that goes to the fuel rail.

@calypso - It's more of an unburnt fuel from the exhaust, was thinking of taking it in for a dyno and get a co2 reading.

@Nikhil - Could your high consumption be related to a heavy right foot :fencelook:

Mine sits at 12.0 (non highway).
Though the OBC under reads by 1l/100km. I've checked this numerous times on my car.
So actual is closer to 13l/100km.

Have an emissions test done on the car, its possible that the hydrocarbon levels are a bit on the high side which could be as a result of your rear silencer being blocked ( bare in mind that if you still have the original exhaust that its +- 13 years old by now )

The last time I checked mine was 8.9 litres per 100kms S50B32. It doesn't go over 10.5 or so with normal driving.

I drove down to dbn during the festive season and averaged 7.6 litres per 100kms according to the OBD

I also get a fuel smell when idling for a while. I still have the stock exhaust.

Yeah i still have the original exhaust. The emissions test is it the same as a co2 reading done on a dyno?

Can a blocked silencer be unblocked or do i need a new one?

When i launch there's a slight hesitation(similar to turbo lag) but throughout the revs it's fine. Another thing is when I'm at a robot, the revs will drop to 500rpm and then go back to normal and this happens intermittently.

Also forgot to mention that when I accelerate let's say from 1st gear and I take my foot the throttle at around 4500rpm, I hear a sound from the exhaust that sounds like there's a piece of metal bouncing up and down inside the exhaust.

Mine does not have a OBD but I recon it is about 11L/100km or so at the moment, I am doing a trip to Burgy in JHB this weekend and will do a top up with a decent calc.

Thanks, would really appreciate it.

After checking on the net it seems 10-11L/100km is the normal consumption. Tonight I'll do a diagnostic and check if the o2 sensors are fine.

Do anyone know where I can get an emissions test done?

I've also noticed the rev drop thing. I thought it was the VANOS, or something. When I shift to 2nd I sometimes notice lag but it goes away when the car warms up.
Fuel consumption is about 8.5 highway at around 110km/h and about 12.0 in the city.

After cleaning the ICV and the throttle bodies, and changing one of the O2 sensors, the car runs beautifully, but the idling is :yuck: and the consumption is now 16L/100km :cry::cry::cry:

Now I'm gonna strip the intake manifold again and replace all the vacum pipes.
