S38 rebuild cost

I have a lead on a E34 M5 that needs a rebuild, and are looking into buying it.

What would it cost to rebuild a stock S38? Has anyone done this recently that can give me an estimate?

Budget R100k for new parts.
More still if suspension/fueling/drivetrain need any attention.

Ofcourse but then we talk restoration.
Not always. This particular M5 could be in excellent cosmetic condition but need a few things (besides motor) to bring it up to scratch.

Still mechanical, still expensive, but not quite restoration.

OP, what are the major things to sort out on the car?

The car had the suspension and brakes rebuilt two years ago and a new clutch. It looks very good cosmetically, but not perfect. The engine then spun a bearing (according to the owner) and he has given up on the project.

It would most likely need new timing gear and valves/guides etc. as well if I had to guess.

I will most likely have a close inspection of the car next week. Good enough reason to buy a bore scope.

If it has spun a bearing it will have likely hurt the crank.

Difficult to determine what the extent of the damage may be to the journals

Painfully Expensive. R100k sounds fair. Rather just buy one that needs less work unless you can source a motor for a reasonable amount
