Its that time of the year....

A time where we load the luggage and wife in the boot, strap the kids into their seats, get your music selection going, enable Trapster and maybe a couple of Red Bulls!

Time to hit the road!

So... you've got runflats all round do you?
What provisions have you made just in case of a flat?

Sometimes a tyre just can't be repaired. What then?

Recenty a 6mm bolt punctured a rear wheel on my e90. It was plugged with the big mushroom plug from the inside. The tyre had to be removed from the rim. These fascilities in Koekenaap or Nonieput is not readily available for this.

I would seroiously consider this:
1.) get a tow hitch and throw a sparewheel in the trailer.
2.) Alternatively, drop off a spare at someone willing to assist you, just in case - you can call them up and they will bring it to you (you need good friends for this).

Not sure who to call when this car is out of its Motor Plan.

Help me out here....

1. Mobility Kit?
2. I though you could still do 250km when the tyre is punctured?

If you have a "neat" little puncture in the centre section of your tyre and you discover it early then you can have the tyre repaired (patched, plugged, etc). If you drive for 250KM (which a runflat can), they you've pretty much fU(ked up the tyre wall and will have to replace it.

The other option is buy the E90 space saver spare wheel. It does take up space, but might be the next best option ....

Mobility Kit+tyre weld in mine

The mobility kit has the 'Gel Sealant'.

Tyre Weld just another precaution?

provisions should be fuel, snacks and leave... not weighing up the pros and cons of what you going to do if you get a flat...

oh and i guess you going to need to take some oil with just incase because you cant see how much is in the engine :yuck:

something is clearly wrong here... when i can just check my fluids and leave...

sorry for the rant, but it seems they designing cars in labs now for lab conditions... not very practical when you dont live in a lab :nonono:

Yep, i have the full mobility kit and i got two cans of tyre weld. have used the tyre weld on my bro-in-laws 323i RFT's and it held up for flipping long and he had a moerse hole, we just tested it and it worked quite well, for a temp solution, i think it would be good to have it:thumbs:

I enjoy driving my car on the open road, but if it comes to having to pack in lots of stuff for a holiday, then the double cab makes the most sense, plus it is not phased by bad roads, and of course, has a spare wheel! But I think this whole thing with RFT's is being exaggerated a bit, on average, you can expect a puncture that is repairable, so tyre fix and a pump you should be fine. Even if it means limping to the nearest town. Sure, having a proper spare wheel is going to be better, but let's say you have really bad luck - one spare wheel is not going to be of much help if you have two or more flat tyres.

Nothing beats driving carefully, especially if you are not familiar with the road - this will limit the chances of hitting pot holes which is where you will most likely be stuck with more than just a damaged tyre/wheel.

At the end of the day, regardless of the vehicle used, before setting off on a trip you do have to make sure everything is 100% - how many people actually check that their spare tyre is properly inflated, or still safe to use? But for this reason, all of my vehicles have electric air compressors in the boot.

Safe trip to those taking to the long roads over this festive season!!!
