Run Flat....

Hey Guys!

This is my first post, but can I say that this site has been taking up way too much of my time reading through the content! :thumb:

My question is related to those silly expensive Michelin Pilot Sports on my E90. My insurance replaced a mag wheel and tyre about 10,000km ago because of this crater I hit on my way to Secunda! The car has covered about 35,000km now and the old tyre needs to be replaced.

The cheapest I can get them at is around R4600 per tyre for the 225/40/18 :wtf: - this is just robbery!

I did some research and found a few posts on e90post.com where guys have changed to YOKOHAMA V103 Advan Sport RF's - I can get them at R2750 per tyre?

What should I do? I can almost replace all four of them for the price of two Michelins.

I am also thinking of changing to normal tyres and getting the mobility kit and later on the spare wheel kit, but this is also going to be expensive and I cant really afford to give up half the boot space as it is tiny already! Spare wheel kit is about R4000.

Please help!

Replacing them with normal tyres will affect your insurance and motorplan.

Thanks, I did read something like that on a few forums. I called up my sales guy at the Dealership and he could not really give me any concrete info.

Guess I will stick with the RFT's then, but what do you think of Yokohama tyres? I see these exact ones are OE on C63, CL63, S8's etc is some countries.

The problem with going with normal tires besides motrplan and insurance is you will need to travel very very light, as you gona need a sparewheel or sparewheel kit.

Shop around, there is usually specials going around, remember with the 18's its gona be on special but not cheap.

There is a thread here somewhere with a list of all approved BMW OEM RFTs - on the side-wall you will notice a Star symbol which indicates that the tyre is BMW approved. So safe to say that the Hankook RFTs on mine are not BMW approved although they are exactly within spec and as far as I am concerned a lot better than most of the OEM tyres! Another reason why I am still happy with the normal 17" wheel size (225/45/17 front and rear) - not nearly as pricey to replace as the 18" narrow/wides!! Although the E90 looks awesome with these!! :)

You can't go wrong with the Hankooks. Not sure if they're approved for BMW, but I had a set on my Focus ST and they perform VERY well. Much better than the Conti Sport Contact 2 I had before them.

Off Topic: I got a mobility kit as a gift when I purchased my car. What do they sell for?

I switched to Non RTF's due to the cost factor also, my dealer dont really bother and the car is serviced regularly by BMW, My insurance has no problem either, they simply stated that as long as the tyre is within the legal requirements its fine (i have this in writing), So dont stress too much, check with your insurance company and having friends at your bmw dealership also helps!!

I check in 2008 when I bought my 323i. I was told by the Dealer that I could not change away from the run flats. That car had 16". It was the exclusive pack

The current 320d Dynamic is gonna make me cry when I have to change tyres

225/45/18 Front
255/35/18 Rear

I shoped the price and they around R4500 each

Well, just came back from TwT- I replaced all four Michelins in these sizes with Yokohama V103 ADVAN SPORT RFT's. The rears had about another 3-5000km left on them... I visited the dealership before I went to TwT and they confirmed that I could replace the tyres with another brand of the tyre as long as it is within specification. The star on the sidewall is not a requirement. They did however say that all four of them should be of the same brand and type...

Total cost with alignment, nitrogen, balance and insurance was R13,600

TwT quoted on the same Michelin replacements and that would have been about R22,500!!!

I must admit that I do think the Yoki's have less road noise, it will be interesting to see if tramlining is also reduced.

35624km exactly :) and I drive like my gran, Average fuel consumption for city travel is at 6.7-6.8L/100 if that helps...

Checked pressure weekly, really looked after them the best I could...

TwT said that anything from 30000km upwards for those Michelins is very good...
