Ridiculous BMW quote

So I am not a happy chappy.

I have had a pretty bad rattle on the car for a while now. I have had the front wheel of but just cant find it. It basically sounds like my 3yo son threw a spanner somewhere into a hole and now its rattling on the belly plate or something, its rattling that bad.

No other symptoms and I have since done just about 7000km.

So finally I get the car to BMW for a service and to get this sorted. They ask me what I think it could be and I say something on the front suspension. So 2hrs later I get a quote for R58k!
They want to replace upper and lower control arms. Shocks and stearing rack and some other stuff. Absolute BS. So I have to believe these cars go to a ball of shit when doing medium mileage. It only has 150k km on now.

The service advisor tells me that its high mileage and these items needs to be replaced as its worn. He cant tell me which causes the rattle and when I asked whats the chances that it will actually sort the rattle out he couldnt answer. This is very frustrating, sounds like I would just have to pay and pay till eventually its sorted, they dont know whats wrong.

Sorry, I had to vent a bit. I am a bit at a loss as to what to do next.

As always with BMW it’s better to get a second opinion away from any dealerships.

Perhaps take it in to Ross Duncan/TuneTech or someone similar for diagnosis of the problem.

So sorry man. Frustrating as hell. I agree - get a second opinion. I think when it comes to high mileage out of motorplan cars it doesn't make sense to go to the dealers - because they just guess and replace as first option it seems...
Try someplace else that comes recommended...
The other option is to very selectively buy your own parts (Imcomex, Goldwagen, etc.) and look online and try a few of the easier DIY's yourself? If you have the time or inclination or a budy that can help!...

Good luck man!

Yes that is what I was thinking. Problem is I stay in a small town so not many options.

Also the thing here is where do I start, they told me nothing in the end. So I can start replacing stuff now but I have very little hope that it will actually sort anything. The troubleshooting is still nowhere.

I'm reading this post in traffic, please pm me, my car has 100k less mileage than yours and I had a similar issue, if not it sounds like the exact same issue!

Would be great if this could resolve the OPs issue. Tracking down rattles, noises and especially "thumps" on cars are the most frustrating exercise to do.

Really is so irritating! Hope the OP comes right!

If you are in Johannesburg, I would highly recommend taking your car to Shox and Suspension Centre in Randburg.

These guys are excellent in fault finding and resolving.

I have been told that the suspension bits on the F30 are not a rigid as the E90 was, which is something I can believe coming from what I have experienced on my F30's :blueCry:

Hi Singh. Seems like you have reached your PM limit:fencelook:

I have had the wheel off and looked around but could see nothing wrong. But will do so again and focus on some of the mentioned parts.
I am thinking of replacing the control arms anyhow as that gets the most airtime.
I have had shot control arms on an e46 before but that car was unstable on the road ie could not place the car accurately on the road at speed. F30 is stable. What I do feel on the f30 is it being unstable on a bad road. I always atributed this to the stiff suspension but sometimes its a bit much.

Thanks for the feedback so far guys.

90% of rattles are thumps from majority of cars suspension, that I have now learn over time with lowering cars etc, are top shock mounts or stabilizer bar drop links.

I just got reminded of another clue on a bad gravel road (stupid tourist attractions that only share info they want to share)
The rattle stops when I apply the brake.
So I dont think this necessarily means its the brakes themselves but its a start. I have looked at them before but think I will take of the calipers next time and refit them, maybe I can see something.

Will any of those things be influenced by braking Shaun? I think applying the brakes can tighten up the whole wheel and shock strut, stopping the rattle.

Yes the braking can affect it as load changes on the suspension as the nose dips and body roll etc. Have a look at the caliper guide pins, that can cause the caliper to rattle.

What area are you from?

^ Kathu in the Northern Cape.

Visiting my brother in Durban at the moment which is where I did the service.
Will work on the car when I am home again, at the moment I have lost focus a bit because....I just had a meeting with RKMotion!

And I am all smiles!

Sounds like a typical BMW fitter spray and pray quote. They will no doubt change everything as per the quote even if they find, in the first 5 minutes, its a spanner someone dropped on the belly plate.

They obviously have no clue what it is and I bet they are just hoping you go away, because they know from experience that rattles are notoriously difficult to sort out.

I would take it to a brake and suspension specialist before doing anything else.

A bit of a tangent here, but how is your Crank Pulley holding up with the mileage you have done?

Has it been inspected in the recent kms?
