So I needed to replace my front shocks due to the left one picking up a leak. Looked for normal after market options, i.e. Gabriel, Monroe, etc and surprise surprise, no one had a replacement available. The joys of owning a 550i.
Called the dealership and they wanted R11k for the 2 front. :wtf:
Bilstein pricing wasnt too far off from OEM either but still cheaper so that was a plus. Spoke to Moranor for Koni options and the Koni Sport came in at around R8k for the entire car, with the front 2 at less than half the price of the originals. OEM se moer!
Sean convinced me to go with the Koni FSD instead since this gives you sport performance without the compromise of comfort. Sounded like the perfect option for an E60 afterall. It took me a while to make up my mind since the Sport can be fitted in just a pair whilst running with stock on the rear if I chose to. FSD on the other hand is only available in a complete set of 4. Yes, this was still around R1800 cheaper than 2 originals so it was a no brainer.
Fitted them this morning at Koni in Boksburg and I have to admit that the comfort is much better. The little ripples on the roads are certainly less noticeable and so far the cornering feels a lot more smoother. The tyre doesn't give as quick anymore when cornering hard. Very very happy here but certainly not tested properly as yet. Still too soon but I doubt that any disappointment will surface at all around the handling.
So, to every good story, there's sometimes a downside. The ride height has been altered quite a bit. Extremely disappointing on his aspect. Car is around 12-15mm higher without a doubt on the front and about 10-12mm on the rear. I want to cry when I see it. I certainly don't plan on lowering the car, hence the deision to go with the FSD option. Having said this, I am seriously contemplating taking the 20" wheels off because it looks incomplete to me. A stock wheel with lots of gap till looks deliberate.
In essence, I currently sit in a love hate relationship.
