Review: BMW E60 OEM Shocks --> Koni FSD

So I needed to replace my front shocks due to the left one picking up a leak. Looked for normal after market options, i.e. Gabriel, Monroe, etc and surprise surprise, no one had a replacement available. The joys of owning a 550i.

Called the dealership and they wanted R11k for the 2 front. :wtf:

Bilstein pricing wasnt too far off from OEM either but still cheaper so that was a plus. Spoke to Moranor for Koni options and the Koni Sport came in at around R8k for the entire car, with the front 2 at less than half the price of the originals. OEM se moer!

Sean convinced me to go with the Koni FSD instead since this gives you sport performance without the compromise of comfort. Sounded like the perfect option for an E60 afterall. It took me a while to make up my mind since the Sport can be fitted in just a pair whilst running with stock on the rear if I chose to. FSD on the other hand is only available in a complete set of 4. Yes, this was still around R1800 cheaper than 2 originals so it was a no brainer.

Fitted them this morning at Koni in Boksburg and I have to admit that the comfort is much better. The little ripples on the roads are certainly less noticeable and so far the cornering feels a lot more smoother. The tyre doesn't give as quick anymore when cornering hard. Very very happy here but certainly not tested properly as yet. Still too soon but I doubt that any disappointment will surface at all around the handling.

So, to every good story, there's sometimes a downside. The ride height has been altered quite a bit. Extremely disappointing on his aspect. Car is around 12-15mm higher without a doubt on the front and about 10-12mm on the rear. I want to cry when I see it. I certainly don't plan on lowering the car, hence the deision to go with the FSD option. Having said this, I am seriously contemplating taking the 20" wheels off because it looks incomplete to me. A stock wheel with lots of gap till looks deliberate.

In essence, I currently sit in a love hate relationship.

Freakin 11k. Is yours the same as the M5? Can you adjust your shocks from inside with idrive?

Nope. Normal shocks. Not adjustable.

 11k, shees, I wonder what mine will cost.

Well, my boet's E55 AMG was R22k each (front) from agents and he had no option due to the car standing. Also air suspension.

thanks for the review :) hopefully the car will go down after a bit maybe the springs just need to settle a bit after being moved around...

dealers are mental with their pricing Yes the OEM shocks are good and way better than Gabriel, Monroe ect... but you can get Koni for way less and they provide a better damper

Not feeling very confident about it happening. My thoughts are that the Koni shock has a higher pressure value than OEM but I would LOVE to be wrong :)

Is it not that the car is maybe sitting at stock height, and the OEMs were really pap?

probably find your old shocks were very finished then... but shocks should not raise ride height springs set the height... if the FSD did raise the height any non finished shock would do the same :)

let things settle and loosen up...

cant wait for your performance review once you have tested them some more

I actually thought of this exact thing man. The one shock I know was certainly dead due to the leak. The car's handling was still in no way close to poor so I seriously doubt that the shocks were completely tired. Car is on 138000kms so there is no way of assuming anything. Not low enough to rule out pap shocks or extremely high to say that it was certainly game over for them. :dunno:

0 change in height when i fitted Koni sport (should be harder at rest than the FSD) to my car and it still had the originals on at 180000km whatever is causing it I hope it loosens up and you regain the height you were happy with :)

I certainly hope so. :)

Well, just when I thought that it couldn't be rubbed in any worse. Wife just got back from shopping and it's like "why is your car looking so high?"

:bangdesk:

She sees the disappointment and asks "does it drive better now?" :mmm:

"Yeah babes, it certainly does" :)

Yes Abmi :ttiuwp:

Well, if I still have enough energy tomorrow sometime to take pics, I will do so in relation to previous ones on the same spot to check the difference. Hopefully I am imagining :)

Something told me to measure ride height this morning and I just didn't get to it. Argh well, it's not like I dont know my car. I see and drive it everyday.

Wait, I have an idea.
Just stay in the car and it will drop 12mm in front and 10mm in the back!
