Retuning a Tuned Car?

Hi,

I was wondering if it is possible to retune an already tuned car. I speak specifically of software tuning.

Lets look at my car, for example. My car has been tuned by Tunetech, who have changed the map. If I wanted to get Promotech / Excede / Project Shift or some other company to tune my car, how would this be done.

My understanding is that the original map has been changed, and that software is done on the original map. How would it be possible to do this, if the original map is no longer original. Also, seeing as the car now has a custom map, would any other company be able to adjust the existing custom map, or do the different software work on a like for like basis, where a tuner cannot modify another tuners map.

sorry for the story. was just wondering what the story would be if I were to get the car remapped.

I dont think it would be a problem, in reality they just putting a new map on your cars ECU from my understanding so just put the car on dyno, tune see where the changes need to be made and load a new file on...

Most Tuners will "Lock" the map or Tune once they have worked on it.

I have a friend who bought and S3 from a non Audi dealer and found that the car is chipped and ECU is locked. He is trying to find out which tuning company chipped the car so he can unlock and load a stock file back.

Kewl, I'll tell him. The guys at Audi told him they cant and he has to find the tuner who chipped the car to get it back to stock.

Yes totaly posible. BUT not always posible that the dealer can flash it back. It depends on your flashing tool. The cheap ones that some dealers have can only flas and not even read. This is why we always keep the original map.

But if worse comes to worse we get the original map and put it on. By we I mean Rolf haha

Put the original map onto the car and then take to the new tuner , that way new tuner cannot say old tuner broke XXX part if it ever ran into that scenario.

Where is Rolf to comment?

Enjoying a smooth glass of wine in Germany.

The solution though has been said by others above, a superb tuner will have superb connections, for example having contacts from Germany who can provide us with OEM files and even some "special" files for cars not found in SA.

Most dealers cannot flash a car back to stock as their equipment does not allow it, other tuners often lock their files to prevent file theft which also makes things a little more difficult but with the right equipment and knowledge its easy to overcome.

Of course it is a bit more complicated than that when it comes to the actual equipment we use but essentially the point remains that we generally scrap the tuned file on the car, this has actually happened several times in the last week where we have had to request OEM files from the Manufacturer.
