Resonators purpose

Hi just a quickie.. What is the purpose of the resonator?

Because my fan belt chewed a hole in mine :flyfun:

It's a small box under the air filter box that has a small pipe into it.. I think it's called a resonator

its not the end of the world i would just plug the hole with something that cant burn... or try get another one from a scrap yard i think they go for about R400

its a tuned resonating chamber to dampen a spesific frequency, lessens droning from the intake..

Apparently the unmetered air coming into the system could affect the MAF readings and cause rough idles and things..

The little pipe coming into my resonator chamber is brittle so I'm going to replace it just incase.. thanks for the posts guys :thumbs:

i thought it it was part of the air box... unmetered air can definitely cause rough idle replace any rubber part you take off for some reason bmw dont like using rubber that lasts :yuck:

HAHAHA indeed they don't... It's amazing what effect a little worn rubber can have on our cars..

Sometimes a think it'll be better to get an old v8, no computers!.. Those things can run on rubber and still be good.

the only problem with the old V8 is the amount of fuel it wastes :yuck: better to change pipes every 5 years than spend the same every month on extra fuel...
