Repair original or buy 2nd hand?

Hi guys, if faced with the option to purchase a 2nd hand engine with less than 100 000km on it or recondition/repair the damaged engine with more than 150 000km on it at the exact same cost, which route would you go? What are the pros and cons of each route?

Thanks

A good rebuild is much much better than a secondhand engine... Just don't skimp on quality parts and experienced assembly.

Good rebuild and you can make some minor tweaks for added power, what engine and car is it?

Do you get any warranty on the used engine? Can you trust the seller?

If not....rebuild yours completely and you have a new engine..

depends on how the engine will be rebuilt and what kind of work your Mech can do... both options have their issues...

I was thinking about a complete rebuild...not changing of some parts only...

that will cost more than a second hand engine and the builder needs to know what he is doing there is still risk involved ether way

too many workshops will take on jobs that they dont have the skills to do in the correct way so finding a good builder is key here

If the OP's engine is an M54 which overheated badly, then just throw it away and buy the secondhand engine.

These Al i6 engines dont like heat, and will never be the same afterwards regardless of how meticulously it was rebuilt

The engine in question is for a 116i, I'm leaning more on the side of purchasing a second hand one from Bavarian Auto Recycling (IPC) for around R29 000 because I don't know of any good places within my area (Pretoria) that rebuilds/reconditions engines and I think the task will be more tedious. I'd appreciate more advice on this decision. Thanks

Niko, my Dad bought a rebuilt engine many years ago for his Nissan 140Y - we have never been so disappointed in our life about something as back then - the "newly rebuilt" engine was worse than the engine that my Dad traded in for the rebuilt one.

My advice from experience then is to buy a good second hand engine, not to have a rebuild done - there are many places that have the full history of the engine for you and can also start and run it for you, so try to look at something like that.

I do not know if I was just lucky, or knew what to look out for, but more than once I have bought second hand engines and cars, and I have not been disappointed yet.
