Excuse my ignorance on the matter.. What would a low oil temp thermostat help achieve? Is the purpose of the normal thermostat to warm up the engine up to optimal temp as quickly as possible?

Still learning about all the mods for the x35i and curious about this one. :=):

The rennzport one is a thermostat but a "reverse" design of the stock thermostat.

It opens the oil system at around 90ºC while the stock thermostat opens at around 110ºC. This allows it to start circulating through the oil cooler earlier to keep the engine cooler but at the same time will allow the engine to warm up properly first.
Thats the fundamental difference.

The stock spring goes on the end side of the system and the Rennzport on the cover side of the system.

The spring is stiffer then the stock variable one.

Thanks much for the response, that makes sense. I did not realize oil would not go the cooler until it was up to temp, but I can understand why. Good to learn new things about the engine I did not know. :coolShake:
