Recall on Certain BMW M2/3/4, 5 and 6 Series For Rear Differential

As per title, there is a stop delivery notice on certain M2, M3, M4, 5 and 6 vehicles produced between May 12 2016 and July 4 2016. These vehicles will require a replacement of the rear differential prior to delivery, which will obviously result in a delay.

I am not sure if any SA bound cars are affected. I do not know what our market number is. My google skills have failed me to get a definitive answer.

Below is a list of affected VIN numbers, courtesy of a US based BMW forum. I am not sure if I am allowed to link to the source, but a quick google search will get you to it.

If you are waiting for your new M and have the VIN number, you may want to check if the VIN number is on the list. It is my understanding that only the VIN numbers on the list are affected.

Yep, I took mine in a while ago. Took minutes to complete. Booking it in and paperwork probably took the longest.
This one's a little more serious...

Keep in mind that if any SA cars are on the list, they probably aren't even in the country yet.

Woah, sounds major, I'm sure Uncle J will be able to shed some light on this? The market number atleast.

There are of reports of guys who did an Euro delivery and planned to drive their new M on the Autobahn and Nürburgring only to be told on the day they were supposed to pick up the car that they can't get their cars because of the recall. Imagine the disappointment after planning this trip for months and all of the traveling expenses and admin involved.

I've ran a few randomly picked VIN numbers and all of them seem to be US cars, so perhaps this doesn't affect us at all. If someone can provide a definitive answer that no SA cars are affected, then the mods can delete/lock the thread as they deem appropriate. Don't want to cause unfounded panic for potential new M owners.

Hi. Does anyone know if this issue impacts only vehicles alreay built between the stated dates or is it a much bigger problem affecting vehicles still to be built. I see my build completion date (5 Aug) has been pushed by 2 weeks (19 Aug). Not sure if this is the reason.

It could be that your car's build date was delayed due to the backlog caused by having to replace the diffs on the affected cars, but I'm just speculating.

Makes sense. I guess I'd rather have my production (&delivery) delayed than be like the guys in the US whose cars are stuck at VDC or the dealer waiting for the replacement diff for who knows how long.
