I took it to Auto Munich in Edenvale (what a load of bullshyte) they kept on pissing in my face and telling me its raining. I will never go there again. Anyway R4000 waisted for a water leak, they didn't even get to the leaking valve stem seals. Anyway took my car to Ross Duncan in midrand on monday and they replaced the valve stem seals and head gasket and complete head overhaul for R7000

Hi guyz,

I know this is an old thread, but sitting with my finger in my %&*#@ and googled E46 N42 replace.....and came up with this thread.

When me and fiance found out we are having a baby last year, I thought let me sell my bike, and buy a nice family car - E46 318i Touring it was!

I am in similar position, in Cape Town, BUT, according to the repairer, Goch & Cooper, the motor is not repairable.
There is massive hole between 1 and 2 in the block, amongst other things, but all in all, everything else is tired.
So no repair option for me......only replace option.
I have a Motorvaps warantee, and they will contribute R13k to this....which is a drop in the ocean.
The strip and quote came to about R5k, and to do the job with all consumables and set up and all, the bill will be R19k. This excludes the motor...
Mike's place has one for R25k. Goch & Cooper does not want to buy motor from them, due to previous bad experience, but they can find a motor in Jhb from one of their faithful suppliers for much more! (conveniently....sorry, might just be the shock talking).
So to get the job done - total bill = R59k! All included. Minus R13k Motorvaps contribution.

I bought the car a year ago, and paid R60k!

Any advice regarding which angle to take, an alternative motor supplier, anything would help....

Thanx guys!

Howdy gents!

So I ended up buying a motor.....R24k later.... from Mike's Place...they loaded it up on the forklift, gave it a good wash, dropped it on bakkie - and then I delivered it to G&C.

G&C called me now...old motor is out, they noticed a few things on car that they need to show me (off course) and the new motor which I dropped off, they took off the intake manifold and found wetness and carbon in it.

Asked me to come and see, so that a fully informed decision can be made.

Carbon should be normal right? Its just a question of how much right? And can the wetness be from the wash...seeping through from the throttle body?

I am going in tomorrow morning to check it out.....and hoping with a good understanding of what to look for/at?

Please advise...

Thanks in advance...

Gentleman! She is back!
Got the car back on Monday....did police clearance and all the standing in que's to have her back on the road.

BUT!! I received the car back, with a few issues.
1. Headlight s are not working - this is due to headlight module that failed. It is on back order, and will be hear in the new year.
2. The cd shuttle wasnt working - I sorted this out yesterday. Sticky gears.
3. The BC isnt working. I press it, but it doesnt switch between the functions, and the display is stuck on --:--
I cant set the time either. So the BC button, and the reset trip buttons not reacting.
The speedo is also dead. The mileage ticks over, but it does not show speed. Cruise control works perfect tho!

So with those buttons not reacting, the doors dont lock when I take off, as it doesnt register the speed.

Now with the job being done with engine replacement, the battery was disconnected for a while, ran dead, recharged, etc.

My question is - what would be the reason for the BC, the reset buttons, and speedo not to work?
G&C is also puzzled - they want to send the car somewhere else in the New Year, as they cant figure it out?

Will the car has maybe lost its programming during the battery disconnect period?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.....

Thanks!

congrats on getting your car sorted!

if im not mistaken, the dash is paired with the ECU so a motor swap shouldnt cause an issue (if its the exact same model motor and didnt replace the ECU). i'd probably put it down to some lad forgetting to plug in some stuff when putting in the harness :)

im sure some wizards from the forum will chime in soon though :coolShake:

Thanx KT!

I hope its as simple as that, but doubt it. They looked everywhere and checked everything and still puzzled.
I have faith in their work - but they don't have answers, which makes me nervous.
Oh, I forgot to mention - they did put in another cluster to see whether it might be mine, but the same issues came up.
So not a faulty cluster....
