So my brother just bought a "new" 335i (n54) and I thought, while he is currently still in the states, I might surprise him with a little software upgrade on the auto tranny.

The so called upgrade is known as the Alpina B3 Auto tranny software upgrade. In short, it updates the auto tranny to run more like the dct variant.

Now im not new to diagnostics and programming but have read a few stories where guys do this upgrade and the tranny does not work anymore or the paddles dont work.

I then decided to contact Gert aka Ratslaaf@obdworx and asked if he would be willing to help met out. Only problem is that I sit in CPT and he is in the highveld.

We decided that he would program the car from his house via my laptop in CPT using TeamViewer.

Although I made things as complicated as I could for Gert (eg. bad Wifi, a "special" diagnostics cable, still needed to extract updated SP Daten and only lunch to do the upgrade) he was more than willing to assist.

Unfortunately, due to the above, we could not finish everything before 2pm and he was willing to continue later on.

8:00pm (yes, 20:00) Gert was still willing to assist and we did the software upgrade.

All I can say is WOW. The Rev Match Downshifts are just awesome (especially pulling up next to other cars and pedestrians with a blip from the exhaust) the changes are lightning quick too.

Thanks to Gert for being willing to assist even after hours and his patience throughout the entire day.

As a "rookie" diagnostic reader and programmer it is just astonishing how much knowledge this man has when it comes to coding and the likes.

I would recommend him to anyone without thinking twice and just want to thank him again. What a legend.

PS. I hope my brother doesnt read this thread...

Well done guys. I am interested to know what version software you got Gert. There is also the software version specifically for the N54 (not alpina) but I have not laid my hands on it.

I have not been happy with mine and flashed it back to stock. It could have just been a bad INPA version I got too :=):

Anyway, hopefully we can hook up sometime via teamviewer and play around.

Hey Charles,

Let's discuss over the phone? Please PM me your number and we can chat a little about it.

One of the issues we had last night was that the cable was flaky so it made things a little sticky - something I'd rather not have to repeat. So it would only make sense to have an 'agent' of sorts in the regions with whom I can work. I'm just spit balling at the moment, but it is an option I'm considering especially when I want to get the remote coding concept off the ground properly.

Ta,

Nice work. Is there any downside to the Alpina B3 software upgrade?

Yes, there is. In order to make those quick changes, the pump works harder. And if your box is borderline already it might make things worse.

But if your box is healthy then I can't think of any downsides. I've certainly not seen any evidence online that boxes are breaking as a direct result of this.

Well done again Gert!

Teach me :praise:

I don't mind sharing the love boet, I really don't. Happy to show anyone who is keen how to play with coding. In fact I've mentioned it a few times in the past as well.
