Rand plummets following Gordhan summons
The rand smashed through R14 to the US dollar following news that Pravin Gordhan has been summonsed on charges of fraud.
The rand plummeted against major currencies following the news that finance minister Pravin Gordhan has been summonsed on charges of fraud.
EWN reported that Gordhan’s fraud charges relate to the early retirement of his former Sars deputy Ivan Pillay.
Gordhan will reportedly face charges of fraud along with Pillay and former commissioner Oupa Magashula.
The charges follow a long silence from the Hawks and the National Prosecuting Authority, after it was revealed in August that the finance minister faced possible charges of corruption relating to Pillay’s early retirement.
The rand started to weaken shortly after the news of Gordhan’s fraud charges emerged, and dropped from R13.90 to R14.22 against the US Dollar within minutes.
