The way I realised it was the pump was after I let the car idle and get warm and the all of the sudden water came flying out as it dripped on the pulley and flew all over. Just a note as well. If you thermostat is shot your electric fan will NOT work.

if you would like to know for sure if your gasket is cooked

do a pressure test at any good radiator place: thumbs:

but ja hard pipes spell trouble as it means your car is building way too much pressure....

I checked last night and the lower pipe is also pressurized. Looked around and there is no water dripping around the water pump. Another thing is electric fan works so I'm guessing its all pointing to head gasket

Will do a pressure test in the next day or so and see what that shows....

  • Blows out white smoke (Not sure if this is relevant for a diesel)
  • Oil in the radiator due to the oil pressure being double the water pressure

Here is a link to all symptoms to a blown head gasket or cracked cylinder head:
Symptoms leaking head gasket or cracked cylinder head

If you do not have any of those symptoms then you must have a very small leak somewhere that's only causing it to leak under pressure

Thanks for the link. very insightful. Don't have any of those symptoms so will spend this holiday time carefully inspecting the pipes and all to see if I can identify where is the leak.
