Hey Leon

At that price. With your usage (track etc) I would say just stick with the Castrol Edge.

With a thinner oil you will probably use more then you currently are so I wouldnt bother. To be fair I dont know if your current usage is excessive...

Mike

Not by any means, BMW wouldnt even look at my car when I complained that it was using about 500ml of oil per 2000kms odd. They just said that it was well within spec for the engine to be using that much oil. Since changing to LM though, I havent used a drop

I am happy that you and Sir Sparky are loving the oil. Its the same thing with the Subaru guys. They cannot stop raving about the synthoil an Cera Tec combo

Thanks Freerider

Actually it’s a massive relief, I was getting worried as the turbo job was done 110 000km ago already.

Just to add one note on oil change intervals for BMW's...especially the turbo cars, V8s and above...

These engines run VERY hot...we are talking well into the 110C - 120C coolant temp...idling on a hot day. I took this into account when deciding on oil change intervals for my 7. Surely oil is going to be totally shot by 20 000KM at that temp (based on that being the coolant temp and not the oil temp), no matter how good it is?

Thanks Mike

I think the car does suffer a little bit from blow by (Think most cars do though). I tend to lose close on a pint per 5000Km in normal driving and then close on 2 if I drive the poor car like a jerk. Is this exsessife? Also I just called my local and they still sell EDGE 10W60 for R 340.00 per 5L

Thanks
Leon

Hi Leon,

At that price are you refering to Edge Sport 10W60 ? or Edge 10W60 thats M Power approved, if its M Power approved then i want some at that price :)

Hi M_POW

I actually have no idea what the difference is between EDGE 10W60 and EDGE Sport 10W60. I use the latter it is API SL/CF, ACEA A3 / B3 / B4 approved. According to www.CastrolEdge.co.za there are only 2. The 10W60 and the 5W40. Sorry if this does not help. Mike any ideas?

Thanks
Leon

Thanks, I will check it out at Makro. The car gets a change every 5000Km so the normal EDGE Sport will have to do.

I want to put a spanner in the discussions. I also drive a 540I e39 and the recommended oil from the dealers is to use Castrol TXT. This oil is very/very/very expensive and only comes in 1l quantities. The question now is: Should I stick with this and pay my salary on oil, or should I switch to the Edge sport as discussed in this post.

What makes the Castrol TXT so superior to the rest of the other good 10w60 oils?

the txt is 5W30, i replaced that with liquimoly, and at R350 for 5l it works out a lot cheaper. That and the fact that my car no longer uses oil like it used to when i was using txt, which BMW said was perfectly normal consumption at about 500ml per 1000kms

Freerider is using Liqui Moly Longtime High tech 5W30 which is a BMW approved, SM spec oil.

He has just picked up some of our Top Tec 4100 5W40 Oil though so I look forward to hearing his thoughts on our BMW designed engine oil.
