Questions regarding oil

Freerider is using Liqui Moly Longtime High tech 5W30 which is a BMW approved, SM spec oil.

He has just picked up some of our Top Tec 4100 5W40 Oil though so I look forward to hearing his thoughts on our BMW designed engine oil.

I bought Liqui Moly Synthoil High tech 5w-40 and want to know if it is suitable for the e39 540i 4.4l M62 engine or should I swap it rather for the Top Tec 4100 5W40 Oil?

Just my 2 cents about oil changes. I know an old guy, in his 70s, meticulous about his cars, to the finest detail. He changes his oil every 3-5k km, depending on driving conditions, and he got his e30 325i, to do in excess of 700 000km without one engine issue. No overhauls, no loss in compression.

Could i possibly trouble the clever chaps for a suggestion as to what would be the most suitable oil for a 318i Facelift ( 2003 )
I all ways listen very closely when the topic of oil changes arise... Seeing as we have a very knowledgeable man in the form of Mike at hand, I would like to take the chance while i have it lol.

I would far rather spend a bit more money and service more regularly than :cursin: pay up for a rebuild because i was stingy to shorten service interval or spend a couple hundred bucks more on oil.

So with that in mind... what would be the best advice regarding corrrect oil / interval for a 2003 318i FL, Where the owner would like to look after his car, even if that means higher cost and shorter intervals.

Much appreciated Gents !

Yo, Mike! The here man is callin' you!

Stiffler, I did my Polo at 10k intervals myself instead of 15k and today it's on 242k and not using oil.

I probably should not mention this on the official oil question thread, but I serviced since 150k with Lubritene's 15W40 no-name oil... Now most would probably not recommend this, but please read on...

A little off topic, but for background info, I had to replace an exhaust gasket last week and after I got a quote of R1500 for the replacement, I decided to DIY. Got 4 new gaskets for R14-95 TOTAL and did the swap. Not something I would willingly do again, but I was a lot of fun.

So while I had the exhaust header and intake header off, I decided to look what's under the top cover. So here's the result. NO sludge, no nothing! CLEAN!

I would suggest swapping it for the Top Tec 4100. Fully Synthetic oils like the Synthoil can cause major issues on older cars especially if they have never run a Fully Synthetic before.

Top Tec 4100 is also designed for BMW specifically and being a hydrocracked oil it offers longer service intervals as well as a lower cost for an oil that in your circumstances will perform exactly the same as a Fully Synthetic.

Hey there.

I suggest Top Tec 4100 for your car. As mentioned above. The 4100 Top Tec range is specifically designed for BMW engines and offer extremely good shear stability aka protection for our engine. At about R385.00 Incl. VAT its also very good value for money :)

Of course in order for the oil to work effectively after a oil change I recommend you use a Engine Flush prior to changing the oil which removes soot, lacquer and carbon build ups. That way your oil stays cleaner for longer.

The next product I recommend to everyone is Cera Tec. This is a fantastic additive and we have had the most amazing results with it. Its a ceramic protection wear additive that makes use of Boron Nitrite (One of the best lubricants available in the world) as its base. The product offers more effective cooling, smoother engine running and 100% startup protection. This is vital as most wear in an engine occurs during startup.

The price for the Cera Tec is: R240.00 Incl. VAT

I hope this helps? :)

What car is that Hellas?

Mike

Sorry about the delay :slap:

Aaaah thats why its so clean and a basic oil worked.

Not huge demands, a conservative engine and good history etc. On anything more then a 1.4 you gotta start using decent oil.

That polo did a lifetime average of 160km/h. I asked a lot and always got every drop it could give. Petrol consumption were always about 8km/l which is an indication of the load on the motor. Don't get me wrong, it was not senseless revving and spinning, but pure long distance high speed touring.

Pure distance at constant speed is better for an engine and actually has less demand on the oil and engine :pimp:

That could be another reason why it is so clean

Mike... Appreciate your advice and i intend to follow it immediately.

FInal questions...
1) where in PE can i get my hands on your oil ?
2) Where in PE can i get my hands on your additive ?
3) Do you have a prefered brand of engine flush and/or procedure for the flush ?
4) What ratio do we add the additive to the oil ?

Much appreciated !

Hellas... if i find out my Fiance is getting lifetime average of 160km/h on the polo she is in deep :censored: :)
No danger actually... she drives her car very carefully.

While we onthe topic... what oil would you recommend for the Polo, intend to service her myself once she comes out of warranty.
Its a 1.4i hatch

Cheers

I opened my oil cap to look and see what the heart looks like. With the help of a 3 million candle power torch, it looked bronze, gritty and filthy. Is that normal? (Felt like getting my girlfriends toothbrush and cleaning it).
