Purpose and Value of the Forum

To all Fanatics out there, in my opinion, the purpose of the platform being the forum is to allow healthy discussions to take place and allow the guys who need info, suggestions and guidance to be assisted by Guys who had similar experiences or have the expertise in sorting out certain issues that prevail on our beloved BMWs.

I feel it is totally uncalled for for a Fanatics to interject and question or dispute what another Fanatic is advising on. Some simply use the forum as their personal platform to be a nuisance to other users.
For eg. The For Sale section; whoever is posting there obviously needs to sell something, so let it be. There's no need to question the sale, or argue the price etc.

All I'm asking for is common courtesy to other forum users. On a thread where CTN E90 330i were asking for advise on molding, i provided comparisons of gains I achieved on the E46 and the possibilities on the E90 with those kind of mods. Immediately my car came into question and the entire thread got derailed. I was even called out to prove my gains.

That was not the intention of my post. There's no need to post unnecessary, irrelevant responses just to rack up your post count.

You rather have 500 posts of quality value add to other users than 10000 posts of crap and a waste of bandwidth.

Just my views, not a rant, hope I don't get banned for this.

Well.. I agree yes this is a platform for the common love of BMW. I do, however still maintain that a healthy debate is good. :=):

If you are posting something which could be factually incorrect it should be the duty of the more knowledgeable members to correct facts. That said I agree it should be done with respect.:coolShake:

Problem is often, that we have too many "grown-up guys" behaving like high school chicks behind keyboards, and often they need more work to focus on, as this usually happens during office hours.

I agree with adult conversation. But expecting no-one to comment or agree whole heartedly with everything everyone posts would kill a forum. We should strive toward open, honest, respectful criticisms of peoples posts. If you feel that something is wrong refrain from personal attacks.

Hopefully everyone learns to treat forums as though they were face to face with someone.

Moderators are crucial for that and a zero tolerance of personal attacks should be enforced. Nuke a post if it incites. :RedNo:

Agrred on healthy debate as we all simply cannot agree on everything. There are several threads were guys ask for the opinions of others and it goes down well as some say "nay" and some say "yay".

My own thread is an example when i sprayed my wheels balck, not everyone liked it, but I respected their views while others liked it.

It is where soemone drifts totoally off topic and passes accusations, is where i have a problem:RedNo:

This is an open forum and open to discussion.

The problem is that there are certain individuals here who have had the freedom to stir and cause trouble without any action for to long. They now also have a little fan club that fully support them.

As an open forum, no single member can have a know it all attitude, that is also a problem here. When certain members post like they the authority on a subject and someone else posts a different view, thats when the kak starts. The fan club gets involved and just to prove how great they are, start spamming with negative rep points etc. Lol.

Will this change ? I doubt it. Ive been told that many positive changes are planned. But I guess time will tell. I will still be here either way.

main issue is some people feel they need to fight to the death and this is when things get personal and ugly...

Differences and difference of opinion is a healthy thing. If everything and everyone were the same life would be boring. Arguing to the death only serves to prove insecurity of self belief and the need to reaffirm ones views through others acceptance of the said view. So what does it really matter or count for if someone disagrees with anyone else's view? The party in the wrong will at some point learn their lesson in the school of hard knocks.

Figure of speech Karsh. Eg. If I had to hold on to the believe that I can change oil in my car every 100000 Kms despite what people tell me, at a point that will end up costing me big money......school of hard knocks.

Fortunately the changes you mention are aimed at reducing the guesswork when it comes to moderation and dealing with generally sticky situations or difficult people.

I do think the rep system has been abused in the past, but at the same time I think others put too much stock in rep points and their effect (when, let's be honest they are no more prestigious than post counts).

We have a process to follow that's well documented as well as various forum systems that allow us to manage the community. We simply need to make sure things are applied consistently, but at the end of the day everyone should realise that no 2 situations are identical (because no 2 people are identical) and we need to apply some lateral thinking in some instances.
