Pulley Chatter

Hi guys.
On my 2011 E90 320i I had endless chattering on low revs and pull away. I took off the engine covers and had a look while my dad had the car in gear (1st and 2nd) with the handbrake up to simulate a low rev pull away. You can clearly see the tensioner pulley shaking from left to right, that's also where the noise comes from. I got a new pulley yesterday and inspected all other pulleys and the serpentine belt and all looks fine. After installing the new pulley the chattering is still there...now coming from the new pulley. Any suggestions? Am I missing something? Thanks in advance.

We had this on my son's E46 320d auto. It was so bad that i would put the car in neutral when at a robot as the rattle would make the driver next to me look at me with pity in his eyes. After a loooong hunt we found that the replacement dampner pulley that was put on the car nearly a year previously was out of round and it was jerking the tensioner pulley assembly and that was what was making the noise. We replaced the dampner pulley with a new one. Problem solved! Things we tried to remedy the problem was a new tensioner, new jockey pulleys, gearbox and engine mountings, numerous other efforts like jacking up the car and listening for noises, fixing a missing bolt on the metal undertray, etc. My advice is change the dampener pulley on the crankshaft! Btw, the noise was only on idle, went away as you drove off. Took us about eleven months to find and fix the problem!

We do suspect the dampener pulley, bad it is hard to see any physical damaged. Purely by looking at it, the pulley looks in a very good condition. I also understand that it takes a half mm delamination to cause a vibration. Is there any way to confirm that it is the pylley?

I had a look at the pulley and the bearing, they both seem to be in a good condition.

See that it freewheels one way and locks the other way almost like a bicycle wheel would do. I have changed plenty for the same reason

Hi, I had the same Issue
Changed the unit on top with the 2 pulleys , noise remained.
Changed the Vibration dampner and the noise went away.

Make sure you change the belt as well, or the noise will remain.

Normally two things cause this problem. Then belt could be stretched or incorrect size fitted. One fanatic had brand new oem belt cause a noise. He changed everything only to find that it needed a slightly smaller belt. Most common issue is the damper pulley. Numerous times I have heard of new pulleys causing this noise and I have also experienced it on my own car. Unfortunately it is quite expensive and if your car has the auto gearbox, quite difficult to open the nut holding it in.

Have a look at the alternator pulley is yours a standard type or a clutch type pulley.
The clutch type sieze up.
If it is the clutch type you should be able to spin it back and forth and you will feal it lock up that's good.
If it feels solid and not locking up its no good replace it.
