Pull handbrake to avoid corrosion?

Hi,

I saw this in my owner's manual.

To avoid corrosion, you have to pull the handbrake from "time to time when moving away".

Has anyone done this?
How regularly should you do this?
I have concerns with driving away, even slightly, with any pressure on the handbrake, especially an old school manual handbrake.

I am pretty sure this is BMWs way of saying it is Okay to Drift your car! :smilebounce:

On a serious note I think this is for the guys in Europe where everything rusts when standing still.

No harm done in doing it mate. Sometimes I gently use the handbrake whilst coasting to a stop, it just clears all the crud out the handbrake drums. Good idea to do it from time to time. Obviously not every time you drive, cause you’ll wear out the handbrake linings, but deffos from time to time.

I dont ever use the handbrake since the car is an auto. maybe I should. I have also heard that some of the BMW's that come with the electronic handbrake tend to be problematic.

Won't the parking pin on the autobox get worn out quicker if it is used without the assistance of the handbrake? CAR magazine had a great technical feature on this a few months back.

Yes this is obvious... one should always use the parking brake to take load of the auto gearbox when parking.

I thought this was common knowledge amongst guys who actually read the owners manual.. But for those who don't, if you consider how the brake shoes "pivot" depending on which brake lever is being used it makes sense to use it slightly coming up to a stop or pulling off, from time to time of course. (Most commonly; Cars with rear discs - brakes shoes only pivot from one point to apply handbrake. I've done it in pretty much all the cars I've owned in an effort to maintain even wear and I've always got good life out of the brakes.

DO NOT PULL YOUR HANDBRAKE TO MAXIMUM WHILE DRIVING!!!!! THIS CAN BE EXTREMELY DANGEROUS!!
