Propshaft Vibration

Gents.

So I get this vibration coming form the center of my car(E90 325 150000km), only when accelerating . When coasting or decelerating there's no vibration.

Also when rolling the car in gear or reversing, there is a loud squeak like some rubber is worn out. The squeak happens at the prop speed (faster than wheel speed) and goes away when I shift to neutral.

I'm currently assuming it might be guibo or center bearing. Is there anything else that I need to check out?
Any other rubber joints that can wear out on the prop?
Visual inspection of the guibo doesn't show any cracks or doesn't look worn out.

Trans mounts are all good also.

Thanks guys!

Hi,

if you can feel it on the center tunnel i would check the center bearing and you should check if the rear universal isn't busy seizing. You would need to disconnect the prop-shaft from the diff to check this. Best would be to remove the whole prop-shaft and check that the universals move freely in all directions.

Regards

Thanks John.

Thats one more thing I'll also check.
Hope its just the bearing or guibo tho...

I have the same issue, i just replaced the bearing but can still feel a slight vibration. Going to get the universal joint checked, if its not that, then will probably have to balance the propshaft

Is it necessary to have the propshaft balanced before it is put back?

I would say, if you removing it, you may as well have it balanced

I took my E46 Wagon to Driveshaft Centre in Durbanville this morning for the exact same issues/Symptoms

Refused to do the work as its a k*k job to do laying under the car

Center bearing Was DEAD!!!!

If you cape town based, Take it to them, speak to Leonard. YOu can tell him Khalid referred you///

If you not CPT based, Other guys can maybe advise

Costing me 1k for labour and balancing prop shaft.. Part i supplied (E46)

I was told that it isn't necessary but i'm starting to doubt that, seeing that my bearing had to be changed twice in less than 3000KM

Gents...

Bad news.

Guibo and center bearing is fine (both look brand new tbh).

Sound and vibration coming from the diff.

Don't know how to take this forward from here now...

Symptoms are: Vibration at 50-80 kph under acceleration. After 80 kph, everything is quiet and normal. No vibration when coasting at any speed.

Definitely an issue with the input side to the diff. That squeaky sound in reverse comes from the input side of diff and squeaks with prop rotation and not wheel rotation.

Some Help is needed. Im freaking the f**k out now.

Hmmm. You say it only happens when you accelerate. That makes me think, it is one of the components under stress when you accelerate. I imagine its the diff pushing back against the rear diff bushing. What else is under stress at that specific moment at the rear sub frame? Any rubber thats worn and needs replacing ect?

Interesting about the rear diff bushing.
I have looked at the bushings but not with full attention as I was focusing on propshaft and input.
It's hard to believe a diff would die on me at 152000km, and it's a 325i, so no high torque.

I also doubt its the diff. What I was trying to say is, think along the lines of the items that are under pressure when you accelerate. When coasting, those same items wont be under pressure. Thats the list of items I would look at.

If you don't feel the vibration when coasting from 50-80 but you feel it when accelerating, it makes sense that your centre bearing and guibo is 100% fine. They are not under different pressure when accelerating.

The rear diff bushing on the diff, yes that gets extra pressure when you accelerate, thats why its there. But what else gets the same type of pressure when you accelerate.

Any diff place that I can take to, to have a look? (JHB/Edenvale area)

I might miss a thing or two trying to see the bushings.

I hope it is as you say and not the whole diff....
Thanks for your inputs

Gents.

Got the vibrations sorted.
Took the car to Savspeed.

Sav removed prop, had a look at diff also.

Diff was fine. Universal was seized and center bearing had a bit of wear.

New bearing fitted and prop universal fixed and balanced prop.

Car runs like silk once again...

BTW, Sav was super chilled. Gave me tour of all the monsters in the garage too.
