Problem Resolved: Whining Diff Noises

Hi everyone,

Thought i would share some success... I have been living with this whining noise from diff for about 3-4yrs - started low, then progressively got worse. It whined every time i took a corner or reversed... was more irritating that anything else.... however i was scared that one day i would take off and would see the diff on the floor in the rear view mirror!

Everyone diagnosed it correctly - the LSD clucthes were gone... i changed out the oil about 4-5times... was reaching the stage of looking at replacing LSD with QUAIFE one... which uses helical gears instead of clutches... naturally BMW wants to sell you an entire LSD unit and not the components internally i.e. the clutches...

Also was toying with the idea of getting a second hand one.... but i was scared of buying someone else's problems....

After much searching and finally just doing it... managed to find a manufacturer in the states who has the LSD plates available... imported a set in dec. Bought the correct oil - BMW dealers did not know about this- i supplied the part number and they order for me... was R1100 for 3x500ml... then bought all the seals and bearings... got most of the bearings from bearing man... just 1 that i had to get from BMW... bearing man was about 1/4 the cost as from BMW.

2 weeks ago took the car to my mech who stripped out diff and sent to a diff specialist who refurbed... now my noise has gone completely... holding thumbs that it will never reappear!

Have details available if anyone interested....may the silence be with you...

Awesome job man.

Good work on the part scouting, I am sure you saved yourself a fortune, I would have just looked for an alternative to that expensive Beemer oil, but its all good :p
