Where can I have repairs done to a power steering pump? I have a E87 130i. I live in the Alberton area.

Thanks.

Mine packed up about 6 weeks ago. I phoned the manufacturer (ZF) in Jhb and they said they can repair it but can't guarantee it will work. I asked them for a price of a new one and they said we have to go direct to BMW. BMW's price was about 8k with installation.

I phoned 2 places in Cape Town to see if they can repair it and they said no.

Also phoned Goldwagen and Masterparts for the "aftermarket" one. GW haven't had it (pump for the 6cyl 130i) for years. They've only had the pump for the 4cyl motor.
MasterParts have been waiting for a while, its still on back order.

I went to a BMW Spares place in CT and got one for 2k.

You can fix it,there s 4 bolts at the back of the pump, remove that, inside there s round piece of metal in the centre of the pump working as a bearing,it has 10 metal fragments sloted around it,those metal fragments tend to break and cause the shaft not to turn,YOUR EASY FIX,WILL BE TO OPEN THE PUMP AND REMOVE LOOSE METAL PIECES that fell inside the pump.[/i]

Thanks for all the advice.

I called a couple of power steering specialists in Gauteng. They all informed me that they can't repair the pump because it is electric and not hydraulic. The one guy told me that BMW's price is actually reasonable because he bought a pump from VW the other day for 7.5K. I am not prepared to pay that much!

I will ask someone to open the pump and check for fragments.

I requested quotes from various scrapyards, waiting for prices.

I will let you know what the outcome is.

Thanks.

Just another thing.... A guy from West Power Steering said that it could also just be a fuse or loose wire, and that I should let an electrician check it out.

Give Powerflow a try as well
I recently done Complete Control arms by them for an E87, upper and lower, right and left as well as shock mounts

all in with Alignment was R4500 by far the cheapest from all the quotes I got from other places.
