Power problem with e46 330d

Hey Guys,

New to the forum so I apologise for anything I do wrong in advance

Anyway im hoping that you guys can help me out with a re-occuring issue that im having with my car. Its an 2002 E46 330d, basicly the problem that im having is that the car sometimes (mainly when the outside temp is warmer or hot) loses power. occasionally its complete power where it takes 5 - 10 seconds to rev up like 1k (eg from 2k to 3k) and occasionally but much more often it feels like the turbo is just not boosting at all. Its driving me f*%^n mad!

If it was consistent then I would assume turbo, but when its raining or colder or when I just get in the car and start driving it its 100s... pulls strong and smooth all the way.

I recently have a leaking water bottle issue which I had fixed and thought might have been causing it but its still the same issue.

Hoping that you guys might be-able to shed some light for me before I have to take it to Sav or A stealership etc...

Regards,
The Blue Beast!

I'm NO expert when it comes to cars, tbh I know nothing, but if you say it occurs when it's hot, the car or the outside temp, it leads me to think it's heatsoak. I haven't heard of diesels getting heatsoak, but I don't know a lot of diesel owners.

I'm sure some of the local gurus will be able to help.

your mass air flow meter calculates your air density by checking the mass of air coming in and cross referencing it with the temperature to get to a density. I'm suspecting it could be a dirty air flow meter that can't measure correctly thus giving your control unit wrong signals to give you the correct combustion stoichiometry.

my 2cents is to have it taken to a independent workshop and have your maf, egr and lambda sensors checked.

I had a similar problem in my E46 320d. It felt like the turbo wasn't kicking in cosistently. By the time I had it fixed I only had boost from 3200rpm most of the time. The problem was the EGR valve that was sticking. Had it fixed at a stealership.

Thanks guys, im gonna try clean the EGR and see if that helps....
I know there were some threads on how to do this around on the forums, does anyone perhaps have a link to this by any chance?
