Power lost

Good day guys!
I've been thinking, if I find that car I'm looking for, how much power will have been lost through the years? On Top Gear when they have challenges they find the secondhand cars lose a lot of power through the years.

How close would a 2001 F/L 320d be to 110kW in 2013?
And is there any way to regain the power? Turbo recon' engine balancing, port and polish?

I really have no idea.

I think it all depends on how it was serviced and maintained in the past.

When I bought my 330i, I took it straight to dyno to benchmark dyno it, it gave 112KW on the wheels, I haven't dyno'd since but I have replaced alot of parts that have never been replaced that should have been a long time ago.

Since then the power gains (or regains) have been very noticeable.

Think the more technical experienced guys could shed some light

Interesting thread topic, my car is 13 years old but it still feels very strong and pulls hard.

Regular servicing will keep a car running strong for years but they do lose power over the years. New tyres, new turbos, plugs, flywheel changes all can revitalise lost power :thumbs:

my 10 year old e46 made what it was supposed to when I got it... not that Dyno numbers mean much

It's all a hit or miss situation where service history will play a bit part in any second car.
Previous owners driving styles and habits will play a big part in the fair wear tear of any vehicle or equipment.
Vehicle application, a long distance cruiser or a runabout between the kids schools and shopping malls?
There is NO straight forward answer to this question.:argh:

Thanks guys, what I gather so far is that the car won't necessarily just lose power just because time has passed, more on the way it was driven, and service intervals etc.
On top gear they make it seem as though the power just goes with time.

Any moving part will wear eventually, using specified OEM lubricants is a good starting point in maintaining vehicles.
Cutting costs on lubricants will hit your wallet very hard sooner or later with some unexpected repair bills when you expect the lest.
