Be awake when buying in George... Used to live down that side. The cars I looked at were not all too great under the bonnet. Very few were in good mechanical condition.

I eventually flew up to Joburg to buy a car.

Looks very neat dude. Go have a look at it. But like I said, have a damn good look. I really don't trust secondhand dealers down that side.

You do of course realize, that your not very very far off from E60 money here.....

I've read through this thread last night and thought the same thing. Question is: What electronic bugs may the E60 have in store over the E39?

Also do you get the E60 in manual or is the autobox adequate?

I also looked at an E60. Was concerned over the maintenance costs. Was 99k for the E60. I got my E39 for 89k

My E60, which now has 240 odd on the clock, that I drive like a man possessed daily (when im not taking it apart to do stupid things) is perfectly reliable.

She has cost me in maintance the last 30k,

a exhaust manifold which burst, cause I am running too high boost, and its a failure point, this a mate helped me with, so it was free,

Set of rear tyres, which I picked up for under 5k new bridgstone RTFs

Prob about 2k in service gear, as I change every 12,000, and I use OEM equipment.

Ok I have a big repair coming up, the flywheel is, and has been noisy for the last 60,000km+ its getting progressively worse. I have a brand new oem flywheel from BMW sitting at my office that I need to fit in. that was about 9k.

I have spent on other stuff as well, but that's not the cars fault, repainted where needed, purchased some comfort seats, did some sound, fitting a dension gateway, all of that stuff though is for me.

Bang for buck, this car has treated me so well, and quite frankly I laugh at you folk in your F30 320d's that cost 600k, with your 5k a month car payment and 40% residual or garenteed buy back after 3 years, I find it funny...

By the way, I am still on original turbo, when we took it out, the vanes were a tiny bit sticky, but turbo was still cool, at 240k on the clock.

Am trying to plan a trip down to have a look at her, bank account may not like me very much though having just come back 3 weeks ago!! :fencelook:

I am aware that I'm getting rather close to E60 money here, but I just dont like the E60 as much as I do the E39...

A friend who is in the suspension business but sells cars as a sideline had two E39 530d autos that was for sale and he asked me to have a look at them. The first one, a silver 2001 was in really bad shape. From just looking down at the turbo saw a vacuum pipe hanging in the air, the turbo was covered in oil, the lockable wheel nuts were missing on every wheel (only the four normal bolts per wheel was holding the wheel) and the service lights were showing red. I did not even look further as i was scared even to start the car. The body did not look too bad.
The second one a dark blue 2003 model had some electrical faults. Central locking wasn't working, the electric seats were dead as well as the steering column adjustment, Left rear doorlock would not lock when you push down the button as the button itself just popped back up when pushed down. Car also needed a service. I did start the car and it did not sound too bad. Did not drive it though. Saw that it was in an accident at some time because there was a funny wide section of rough filler which was painted over by the right wheel turret when looking under the bonnet, and the bolts holding the mudguard were loosened at some time because the paint was damaged on the bolt heads (torx heads)
Both cars had in the region of 250k km on the clock. They looked fair at first glance, but was far from fair when looking closely. They were in the market for about R60k each.
What i am trying to say is that one should be very careful when buying one of these cars without decent knowledge of them as you could very easily buy yourself a very deep money pit!

Good advice Solo Man! I for sure am not going to jump into the first car I see that takes my fancy! Granted the one in Mossel Baai has taken my fancy. Spoke to the dealer today and they're willing to put the car through a 101 point AA check which I think is quite worthwhile... Also have the details of the mech who looked after the car and will be giving him a call soon to get some more info with regards to how the car was looked after mechanically, etc...

If the dealer is really confident then they should be willing to put their car through an AA Technical Assessment.

The 101 point check is a good check, but is not very detailed.

The Technical Assessment costs about R2k... And has the car inspected from bumper to bumber... A very detailed report follows....

I would ask the dealer to send the car for the assessment. If they complain about the cost, then tell them that you will pay if the car passess properly...which I think is well worth the R2k if the car is a good example.

Just my R0.02
