Possible BMW E70 x5 3.0d purchase - advice needed

Hi guys

We are looking at getting a BMW E70 x5 3.0d thought I'd do some homework on the reliability of these cars. I've been though a few post on various forums and hoping to get some views on those members that own one of these with first hand experience.

The budget is not high so the X5 will most probably be out of motor plan and looking at 2009/2010 models.

I'd like to know more about the running costs, what to look out for, what generally give problems, suspension issues, auto or manual?

Any info will be greatly appreciated :ty:

Hey bud, great cars very reliable, after owning one for a week it's perfect, before the E70 I had an E53 3.0d. The things to watch out for would be turbo's (start it up give it a slight rev to check if there's any funny noises coming out from engine bay or exhaust, excessive hissing is a big no) there's tons of them around, also check the car around at the back the air suspension could be a real pain at times if the car leans to the right or left or the rear of the car is lower than the front then it's either one of the air springs are leaking or the motor has failed(left or right side down is a cheap fix but both of them down might be a bit expensive) make sure to test drive the vehicle. Other than that it's mainly transfer case, electronic handbrake issues and the sunroof. I don't think they come in manual but the auto box is brilliant. I would suggest a 30sd/35d over the 30d just because they're much more powerful engines when compared but if it's a high mileage one I wouldn't suggest a 35d reason being the 35d is twin turbo and turbo's tend to be problematic with high mileage cars. But that said they're my perfect all rounder, space + comfort + power + efficiency of the diesels... Wish you luck with finding your X5.
