Oops!!!

Just went home to go and fetch the 540i, because I am now gatvol of the oil leaks.

Key in the ignition, she swings and then all of a sudden POOF!!!!

Swing again, and it seems like there is no compression.

Swing again, and she fires up, rocking heavily, sounding like a cylinder or two is not working. Now she refuses to idle, and smells of fuel, badly.

What did I break? Maybe a coil that decide it had enough?

Rick540 - Help needed please!!!!

fuel smell from exhaust or engine bay ? if from exhaust.. some cylinder prolly not firing. better check to see if you didn't blow out a sparkplug or something dude. or maybe an injector died...

I was thinking along that line Clutchy. The fuel smell is from the exhaust.

Maybe the flux capacitor is now a fucked capacitor.

yeah, must be the flux capacitor, it might just need calibrating. Bemow's sell new Boron sphere's apposed to the outdated beryllium spheres. I would highly suggest upgrading.

other than that, it could be dead plug I reckon or coil. have u lifted the engine cover to check for anything ?

I did not check a thing yet (Slipped away from the office to go and fetch her this morning, so I didn't really have any time.

I do however have a 5 litre can of clean unleaded and a match. :)

Just kidding.

Jandre, check all your vacuum hoses, I have the same problem with 535i, if there is a rough idling and fuel smell on the exhaust I know 1 of the vacuums are off. Replaced all of the pipes a while back and no more problem. Take a small mirror and search every where because some the little F:censored:ers are in kak places where you can hardly reach. When I read this now my wife immediately said it's a vacuum problem.

Maybe that pop was an intake backfire, check your MAF rubber boot and other hoses carefully for air leaks.

Thanks guys. Everyone seems to suspect a vacuum leak of some sorts.

Maybe Rick540 will make a turn by me tonight, then we will check it out, otherwise I will have some free time over the weekend.

acctually it could be. I had a backfire after I fitted my new alternator. pop.. and then after that the car wouldn't Idle.. so I opened up the cover... heard a hissing sound and tried to locate it..
one of the intake caps at the back of the manifold blew off.. so I popped an energade bottle cap over it. and Voila, bobs my uncle.

Went to visit Jandre and discovered the fiver had blown it's rubber chair leg stopper off....

I think I'll let Jandre explain that one, but fortunately it was a minor issue.

Quite funny though. My car was idling using non approved aftermarket rubber endcaps on a breather pipe (don't know exactly what part it is. Maybe rick can clarify) anyway, it looks like one of those rubber feet that you get on steel garden furniture. Sometimes a full service history doesn't mean shit.

What year is it?Hopefully it will be an airleak but its sounding a lot like Nikasil issues...thats if the SA market got the Nikasil lined engines.Basically sulphur rich fuel dissolved these linings and symptoms of issues include high oil consumption rough idle, missfiring etc...
You would need to do a compression test and also do a google search for Nikasil
