Hi Guys. Can someone please lemme know what the part is im pointing out? Also, can this part be the culprit for the rough idle i got? I see it has been strapped with cable tie to keep it in place.

By the way, i bought the auto 318ti. Idling sucks now(started the day after purchase), but on the open road it drives like a dream.

Please help a brother out. If any local BMW machy close to Stellenbosch can have a look i would really apprecicate it.

As far as I can see it looks like a part of the throttle assembly.
Depending on how the car controls its idle it might cause a rough idle.

Considering someone fixed with cable ties, maybe look for vacuum leaks...

Rough Idle on the N42 Engine could be caused from a multitude of possibilites.

Things to check for are the MAF sensor. Try unplugging it and seeing if the idle continues. If it does not, then your MAF sensor is faulty.

It could be your ICV, which needs cleaning as its probably stuck and doesn't open and close properly.

Or, what is more likely, is its having misfire. This could be caused from faulty spark plugs or a dead coil pack.

My suggestion would be to take the car to a BMW dealer or certified BMW technician and get diagnostics run. IE. Get the codes. Find out whats really wrong.

First thing I did when I got my M3 was run the codes and I got a code saying the car was running lean.

You never know what you are getting when you buy a 2nd hand car.

Thats a long list of repairs in one go. At the moment, advice would be neither here nor there. A proper diagnostic will help. That mechanical part that is fastened with a plastic tie strip is still a worry to me...:nonono:

That looks like the motor control unit for the (accelerator) throttle body butterfly..

The best thing to do is remove it completely and see if the butterfly in the throttle body is completely closed or partially closed.

Use some silicone to replace the cover and keep it dry.

so Shane had a look at it. He was really busy so didnt have time to do diagnostics on it, but suspected that the car mite be running on 3 cylinders and that a coil went poof. Got a quote for +-R900 at Zeemax to have it fixed. Will keep you guys updated

THANKS:praise:

today was interesting. I got to the auto shop at 1pm, sat there whole day as they do diagnositcs and even a surpression test...no faults were found :(

I should take the car to them again tomorrow. As i was driving home tho, i exprerienced my 1st ever "limp mode". OMF it was scary. Couldnt go faster that 110km/h and uphill it did 40km/h max(reving till 6000rpm). Switched car off, phoned the machy that worked on it and he said when i start the car up again it should be fine... and it was.

All in all, they couldnt manage to sort out the rough idle yet. We will see tomo :thumbdo:

I had similar issues on my E46. Rough Idle especially when cold or just driving around town but fine when car was hot or on the highway.

Replaced coil packs, spark plugs and after about 3 months of back and forth, computer fault readouts, compression tests all of which showed nothing, it turned out to be a tiny crack in the head gasket. Big enough to cause an issue when cold but small enough to 'seal' when hot.

Had the head gasket done and car ran beautifully from then on.

Hope it's not the same problem...

LIMP mode sucks... I used to get it due to a failed coil. I am almost certain this is your problem. Replace the coil.

dude i checked the old threads on ur //M. So it was initially built at ZeeMax in CapeTown?

Thats where i was yesterday with my car and they had me wait whole fuggin day and couldnt fix anything!!The dealer has all his BMW's serviced at that k^k place.

I called him last night, told him that the dudes at Zeemax dunno what the fug they doing and i dont trust their work. He then arranged that i take the car to Donford BMW in Stellenbosch. its 5min from my workplace :)

BMW did diagnostics and was unable to pick up any faults. I was told that for them to further diagnose they will have to take the motor apart, but they AREN'T WILLING TO DO THAT.

HOW can a BMW dealership tell you that they not willing to inspect the motor ??:bangdesk:

Guys i need help...PLEASE!

They do not have "engine man".
In other words they do not have qualified people who can strip an engine and diagnose what is happening.

Surprised?

JSN Motors to the best of my knowledge only has 1 engine man.

Diagnostics will help

Not a good start to your motoring experience in the bimmer, at this stage we can just speculate.

These engines use Valvetronic so could also be a Valvetronic motor issue.

Limp mode(yellow eml light on dash) is most likely valvetronic motor take it back to the garage you bought it from let them sort it out.
