Hey guys, in need of some advice. Just got my 320I e90. 160 000kms fsh at agents ect. Took her for a drive and started to notice a very very slight noise. You only hear it when inside the car and when the car is going through the rpm. If u hold the rpm idle at1500 u can hear it, and it gets faster and faster the higher you rev, you also do not hear it standing outside the car or even when the bonnet is open. Its hard to explain the sound but I will try, its almost like a very slight woshy sound, actually it sounds almost like a cricket at night but very feint. like it could be some sort of belt? The car drives absolutely perfect still but just annoyed as I only got the car today If anybody has had this problem, or could help, your input would be highly appreciated

Hey man, it could be so many things, the only way to know is if we could hear it,
just an fyi, on my previous bmw, I had a similar noise, turned out to be the stabilizer bar wasn't pushed in properly,

Is ur inside fan on when u hear the sound,

Well in order for it to get louder as you drive faster it has to be associated with something that moves faster as u drive faster, if u suspect the belts, spray a little q20 on the belt and drive it and see,
If not I have no clue,
Oh switch of the radio and try also,

You dont hear it with the radio on, even if its on softly, only when its off. Its annoying because I know its there, and just bugged out about it, its prob something so tiny, but I would rather not take any chances

I just came to realise that it must have something to do with the radiator fan, when it was making the noise the car was hot and radiator fan on, I started the car this morning and no noise at all, car was cold and radiator fan not on yet. Any suggestions what it could be?

Is the fan not touching something when it is spinning,
Its weird that there is no sound with the radio on,

U sure its just not the fan noise u hearing,
And u said it gets louder as u drive faster right,

The only reason I dnt hear it is coz the radio is on lol, but even when the radio is on really soft that u can barely hear it, I checked this morning for any wires in the way and found none, im starting to think if its not anything else.. ? Coz the sound is not there when the car is cold and the radiator fan doesnt run but the minute it is hot and the fan is on the sound is there.. And also not coming from the engine bay... Eish this is frustrating

I wont lie, im clueless, I cant think of anything that will make a noise only when car is hot and gets louder as u drive faster except for fan, I think the bmw fans are those viscous fans, so maybe the fan bearing or something,

Miayb I should try abit of q20 on the fan bearing and see how that goes? Wish me luck

Mayb im just being full of crap, but its just strange that once the car warms up and the fan kicks in it starts making that noise, I think I might have to take the car in tomorrow to get it checked out

If you have inpa or dis,run a test on the fan ie: with ignition on send the command for the fan to run, once had a weird sound when the (electric) fan kicked on, turns out it was a bug (grasshopper or mantis) wing that got caught up and got stuck to the cowling on a weird angle and every time the fan went on I'd hear that sound, removed it and noise was gone. My 2c.

So went into a rmi approved service centre today and they said it was a belt of some sort, they say its so slight that they cant detect where its coming from. They suggest I wait till it gets worse to be able to pinpoint exactly what it is

usually thats exactly when the cr@p hits the fan! hahaha, i love that response, because when that moment does come along... they will hand you a nice big bill.

could it be a bearing on one of the rollers or tensioner thats on its way out maybe?

Well they said its not anything major, they said engine sounds perfect no funny noises ect, its just when u sit in the car that you hear it if u stand with the bonnet open and rev the car and hold rpm at 1500-2000rpm you hear nothing unless u in the car, and like I said early its really not that loud, I have really good hearing lol
