Please help out a fellow fanatic, E36 M3 3.2

Hi guys,

I remember reading on the forum where a fellow fanatic had a problem with his steering wheel on his E36 M where the steering wheel itself was noisy (squeeky sound) when turning and the solution given by one of the fanatics was to remove the steering wheel, lube the ring gear, put it back together and then it will be sorted.

Now i had the same problem but now has gotten worse. My steering now kind of gets caught at certain points. It makes a metal ticking sound when turning like something is catching (i hope that explanation is clear enough) :bangdesk: and the steering is heavy.

Can someone help me sort this out as it is very annoying and spoils the fun factor of driving an ///M :argh:

Sounds to me that the 'band' in the slip ring is faulty, cracked or bent.....afraid 'new slip ring' .....but firts try another steering to see if in actual fact that is the problem?

How much is the slip ring? And is it possible to change it myself? Can someone provide a DIY? How to take out the steering an airbag, which part to replace etc

I think it is the slip ring that is the problem, it did fix itself once but its acting up again. The steering doesnt turn freely.

Im afraid its not the slip ring, it may be the bearings in the steering shaft. I have replaced them before on a 328i that had the same problem, steering getting stuck and such. The problem is the steering shaft needs to be removed to replace both bearings.

Thanks Gizmo you hit the nail on the head. By the way where can i get front splitters like you have on your e36?

I just want to thank Ram3on for helping me out yesterday with this. It was not the slip ring that was faulty. All we did was removed the steering wheel and lubed the bearings top and bottom and walla!!!!!! No more squeeks and grinding, springy noises :joy:

Big up to Ram3on for helping a fellow BMW fanatic!
