Greetings All,

I am new to the forum and have just got myself a second beama. My first one is E90 320i, must admit not the best engine made and the second one is E46 323i.

Now i have been told that if i change the cylinder head to that of a 330i i can get the performance of 330i.
On the other hand somebody said i should leave the head and change the crankshaft with the piston con-rods.

Is the any truth to these?

The key difference is the displacement, so Crank and Rods sounds more reasonable than using a 330i head:skit:. I'm no mechanic though, so don't take my word for it.

The ECU of the 330i may also be programmed differently to a 323i. Also, the fueling system and gearing ratios may be different.

It may not be such a simple and straight forward exercise as just changing head or the block internals.

Yeah sell the 320i for a 330i. Not worth the modifications that will cost you more in the long term.

The e90 Platform is more complicated . The e90 330i engine is also made with magnesium instead of aluminum and cast . There are a host of things needed to be changed which will be to costly and will be cheaper to get a donor 330i engine complete.

I have seen on the E30 that you may fit different heads on a 320i block and using different length rods and cranks changes the way the car performs .

I think he is talking about upgrading his e46 323i

Buy a 330i... what money and effort you will spend on the 323i to get it to 330i spec, is not worth it.

Don’t build what you can buy. It’s cheaper in the long run to buy.

I take it this is like the VW guys always wanting to turbo a stock polo. When all the supporting mods have been done and you tally up the costs, you might as well have just bought a GTI and had a more reliable car.

It always is more fun building it thought:fencelook:
