My dad had the e90 323i Auto......It was dead slow and heavy on fuel. It was actually decent when we went to the coast.

I had the e90 325i manual. Was nice until the dealer lent me a 320d auto and i asked myself WTF am i doing with this 325.

Eventually sold it for a 330d but the 320d is an epic epic car to have especially in auto. They go so well together for the perfect daily.

but are the guys not having issues with the auto box..seems to be a few threads with jerking etc.

The auto boxes must be serviced, I believe on a stock car, 60K/km for normal use, 80K/km for a long hauler... tuned cars require shorter intervals as the oil sees very high temperatures.

so you're basically saying that you should buy a car with around 60 000km so that you can do the first gearbox service & take it from there because BMW obviously don't if i am not mistaken? Probably say its lifelong oil etc.? I will try & find the thread but guys were saying Auto & Diesel make perfect sense & its great but they are having issues with the auto box.

In a perfect world maybe, however, I do not think these boxes are fragile at all, ZF serviced the auto box in my 530d a couple of weeks back 220,000km on the clock, gearbox history unknown, so far so good, no errors or explosions.

Therefore, if you purchase or plan to purchase a auto, talk to ZF, have them do the analysis and take it from there.

It’s obviously important to remember that, expected life span is based on proper use and maintenance, so if you're pushing 700NM on the back wheels, and never pay attention to your gearbox which no doubt takes a beating at the drag strip from time to time, it’s not going to last long is it.

Pardon the thread Hi-jack.

i think it is a different box though but we are even talking stock 320d's having issues

These boxes aren’t really problematic at all. The lack of maintenance makes it seem that way.

Service it around 80-100k km and you will have no issues.

Even the guys at ZF rate these boxes quite strong.

ok cool...wont hijack the thread and must check again but ja i was sure the guys were complaining about having jerking issues etc. & getting boxes reset etc. and the problem returns on the 320d auto. Just don't want to advise the OP to purchase a vehicle thats going to give issues.
