Pilot Sport 4S Issue

Hey guys,

Thought I’d share my experience here should there be anyone else with similar issues. So I fitted Pilot Sport 4S a while back and from day one, always had a pressure loss issue. Today with the help of a Michelin rep and SupaQuik Kyalami found the issue which is essentially damage to the tyre wall. Tyre had to overinflated (3.5 bar) and left in water bath for a long time to pick up as previous tests didn’t reveal any leaks. Attached pic of the issue between the chalk lines. Michelin SA claims damage occurred during fitment which is now being discussed with fitment shop. Will keep you guys posted re outcome.

I commented on your post elsewhere, but to me that seems like it is a manufacturing defect rather than installation issue. You would see obvious damage.

My feeling is that the experts from each side will start fighting with each other on this and you will be sitting without a (extremely expensive) tyre in the mean time.

Ask if there have been other complaints surrounding the same batch manufactured. Although i would suspect they wouldnt tell you there was in any case.

How stupid do they think you are to believe that is a fitment issue? Definitely looks like a manufacturing issue from that photo.

Definitely looks like a defect...When fitting it probably just made the defect more visible.

That is a separation of the "inner-liner" splice.
The inner-liner is basically a different compound rubber with no reinforcement simply to "seal" the tyre or to make it air tight.

Its a manufacturing defect.
I can see on the picture already that this tyre had a poor splice even before it was cured

PS - If the tyre manufacturing date is less than 5 years ago, you have a case for replacement. If older, they are going to show you the middle finger.
And I am not talking about fitment date....... #manufacturing date...... which is marked on the sidewall

Make the fitment center give you a new one, they can deal with who's fault it was directly with the manufacturer.

Tyre stores generally have reps for each significant brand that they have or at least a consultant or some point of contact for issues related to their product or "campaign".

Either way it's not your problem. They have narrowed the issue down to that of the manufacturer or the fitment center so the outcome, of their investigation, is not your concern. Request your replacement and carry on. You are the store's client so you shouldn't be concerned with the "3rd party" stuff that will go on in the background.

PS. It's not the tyre stores fault. That defect is blatant.

Thanks so much for feedback and comments guys. For some reason, this post disappeared but is back now.

So Michelin have come to the party and replaced the defective tyre. Fair, honest outcome I think.
