Those tractors are not slow at all. I drove one for a week and I wa impressed. The only thing you will miss about your 323 is the nice tone of the 6 cyl.

You won't miss the huge petrol bill for sure

That is exactly what i thought.
Look I love my 6. but the cost in petrol and the lack of power is a huge issue for me.

in my honest opinion.... DONT DO IT MAN :flyfun:

the 320d is not a bad car at all... has power with good fuel consumption.

i had the 330 i and changed to the 320d...

firstly, u will miss the bmw 6cylinder power and sound.

the 320d start sounding abit like a tractor at 150 000+ kms

DO NOT get it in a auto... TURBO LAG IS BAD.

from experience i would rather wait and invest in a 330d ...

i wend from a 330i to a 320 d to now a x5 3.0d...

AND I STILL MISS THE SOUND AND POWER FROM MY 330i.

From experience try sticking to bmw's 6cylinder engines

the 320d is a very nice car.

I currently drive a 320d and i do enjoy it. the thing that i do miss about a 6 cylinder is that you have the ability to wring the neck of the car, i.e. rev it pretty high. with the diesel all the power comes in at once, and you have fewer revs to work with.

The 130kw and 135kw version 320d are both very good vehicles. great power for the size of engine (the first e46 330D had 135kw so for the 320d which is a litre and two cylinders to make that amount of power is also great).

And then comes the tuning argument. once you tune the 320d it will be crazy fast for an oiler.

I know that theres no coherency to my statements above. Im just rambling and using the ordered part of my brain to work on a legal compliance audit that i am currently busy with.

I drive a E90 320D and its very impressive. Fuel, power, and I don't agree about the TRACTOR noise after 150000km. U will love the boost....i now suffer from a heavy right foot....looking for a cure...:rollsmile::rollsmile::rollsmile:

I agree,

Although you may feel that the engine clattering maybe somewhat noisy, but believe me, you will ask yourself why did you not get the diesel in the first place.

Might seem like I'm :blab: :blab: :blab: :blab: but I' talking from my own experience here.

I'd say you wont look back

Well I bought my 323i E90 from my uncle.

Its a 2007 and had 62000 km on the clock.

Purchase price = R132000.

Never been in a accident. That's why I did not buy a diesel in the first place

I love my 320d and dont for one second regret trading the 328i in on it but I also would love to have the 328i back for a day to redline through the gears.

the 320d goes like hell and in normal driving would give a 328i a serious run but the fun factor is just not the same on a diesel.

if your drive like a hooligan 90% of the time get a 6cy petrol if you drive like a hooligan 10% of the time then a diesel is the way to go.

I'm assuming you looking at E9X 3series looking at your sign....

Some of the guys commenting may have had experiances with the E46 3 series, although I might be wrong.

I can say that the 320d E90 is a good buy, even a high mileage one is safe, if it has been properly maintained and serviced. I actually owned one, bought on 100 000kms and owned till about 130 000kms, didnt have any hiccups, just did normal servicing and brakes. I really miss seeing 1000kms+
on the fuel range which was awesome. Performance and fuel economy are good, especially if you are from Gauteng, where the thinner air wont affect the boosted 320d. Look, the only negatives I noticed with the 320d was :-

1. the engine smoothness can't match the straight 6 petrol (maybe due to it being 4cylinder turbo, although the 330d is as smooth as the 330i, if not quieter inside as well) and really which 4 cylinder in the world can match a BMW six? None, so I accepted this engine characteristic as part and parcel of the configuration/layout.

2. the noise at idle, although on the move the car is incredibly quiet, in fact I had to get used to such a big car picking up speed so quickly with no roar from the engine, with such a "small" engine.

I can say that if you are cruising at 120km/h and need to pick up speed, the diesel will get to 200km/h quicker than the stock 323i or 325i, I'm not sure about the 330i, but will probably be close, but after 200km/h the 330i is obviously stronger. Also with the max torque delivery being so low on the 320d, I had to get used to to having to press the accelarator harder, to get any other petrol car moving. I dont recall any excessive turbo lag, I can also say that the slight lag is no worse than any turbo petrol engines.

In fact the the 320d Steptronic is the one to go for as the gearbox's electronics will keep the engine in the optimum power band, so that it eliminates the turbo lag, the manual will sometimes fall out of the power band because of the driver not having the correct gear selected.

Just my 2cents worth.........you cant go wrong with a 320d, and I'm speaking from owning 2 six cylinder Bmws before the 320d

Hi Ash,

i tend to really disagree with the turbo lag situation..

ok the e90 shape ( thats what i had) had extreme turbo lag in auto models.

The e91 and e92 ( 2008 models up) were noticeably different (i think it there was a engine upgrade) there were hardly any turbo lag.

Hi Ryan

I dont recall having bad lag on my 320d, there was some, but it was not extreme. With the manuals, I remember even getting it off the line without switching off could be tricky, and have see other people battle with the manual.

I dont recall the E92 being released in diesel in SA?

Regards
