what is the best petrol consumption I can expect from my 540i

E34 or E39? My overall average on my e34 540i is currently on 16L/100km and I'd say about 80% it's just pure town driving. My average speed is something like 33km/h. I get 10L/100km on the open road, 5L in town. From what I've seen the e39 's do about the same.

My E39 is currently 11.3 for the month, 12.8 since I bought it 70% highway work.

12.5l/100 average combined cycle here, with a manual. Not sure for auto. And this is if you don't pootle, but don't race all the time.

I use about 20 litres per month , so that seems good for a e34 540i .
So I think I am one of the guys with the lowest running costs on a 540i .
seriously though , about 13.5 l/100 in town driving like old man , 10-12 on open road and 16-18 in town in traffic . I see the consumption rockets when in heavy traffic .

10L/100km on open road. But I found the economy overreads ever so slightly. Actual figures around 0.5L/100km higher
