I call Bs. Namibia and we only get 3 pictures. 2 of a trailer fallen over.

Was that because of Torque steer.

To be honest I would do it again in the X5. The tyre worry is always there, but taking it easy and keeping an eye out makes a big difference. I would have a spare tyre somewhere though just in case. On those wide, long gravel roads your speed creeps up and before you know it you are doing 120km/h. Tyres are just not designed to handle sharp stones at those speeds. The rear tyres are also dealing with stones your front tyre flipped up.

I drove passenger in the Hilux and the X5 is more comfortable on the gravel. Possibly quieter over the corrugations but not by much.

I've owned both a Landy Discovery 3 and E53 X5.

While the Landy will walk over the X5 in terms of off-road capability, I'd admit that I'd be scared to take it on a long distance drive due to the reliability of those things. Never had issues myself, but heard lots and lots of complaints. The X5 (relative to the Landy) is bulletproof vehicle IMO.

On the tyres though, sometimes it's just luck.

:sorry:
most picture hosting sites are banned at work... so i tried a clever work around... bmw.wp must be the only person with a 4x4community login!! I thought they would be visible to all.

Nope i also have one..... :)

Brilliant pictures and I cant wait for my trip next month. What tires did the other vehicles have?

Interesting that the Toyota had rolled with Petrol Jerry cans in it....the most common reason for vehicle burning out on trips like this is grass catching alight under the vehicle.....either when parked and pulled off the road or if it has been building up and not cleared out under the vehicle.

As per the Landy comments, I have owned a few and have done about 20 years of traveling in very remote locations with no issues. Ive had more issues with my BMW's (eg. window mechanisms, radiator reservoir, control arm bushes, torn chassis's etc etc) ....... A lot has to do with the maintenance of the vehicle.
I would take my latest LR around Africa in a heart beat. And yes I have towed two X5's with it....one in the Kalahari (and it had an off road caravan attached at the time) and one in Mozambique where on both occasions they were stuck to their bellies in thick sand.

Very cool!!! Awesome pics!

Strange that for me the pics on page one still don't show even though I am logged in to 4x4 Community.
