overheating !!!!

I had the 320i's head gasket changed a while back.

Went to mafikeng saturday and lekker trip.

Last night on my way back and almost 320km's later as i get on the highway @ gordon road, then by maraisburg road the car overheats.

Is this a thermo stat that got stuck?
Should i just take the farkin thing out?

Hi, dont take the thermo stat out.
I had the same problem with my sisters cars, remove the Thermo and car still over heats.
Then put a new Thermo Stat. sorted.

You can search my last post about this and you'll see the amount of things i changed 1st.

Hi, dont take the thermo stat out.
I had the same problem with my sisters cars, remove the Thermo and car still over heats.

Isn't the thermostat and the housing one unit? I mean, can you actually take the thermostat out of the housing and put the housing back? Also never heard of any car running without a thermostat that overheated.

In some cases the housing and thermostat are two different parts so it is possible to remove it, but you should never run a car without a thermostat unless you are 100% how all the coolant channels run and how the coolant will be circulated without the thermostat in place.

my car definately has a separate thermostat.

I replaced it when i done the waterpump and head gasket about 2000km ago.
Are there any disadvantages of removing the thermostat?

Yeah, the engine might overheat and you'd never even know about it, well until too late of course.

How do you get that? Its not the temp sender, just a mechanical valve that opens when it reaches a certain temperature to send water to the radiator for a cooldown...

I am not to sure about the BMW thermostats, but some the thermostats act like a switch (in the form of a valve) to select a circulation path, usually one that circulates the water inside the engine to warm it up and the other to circulate the water through the engine and the radiator to cool it down. Now if you remove the thermostat you have uncertainty about the circulation path and it may happen the waterpump only circulates water through the radiator and not through the engine due to differences in pressure.

But in the end my point is, if there is something wrong with the thermostat just replace it, why take unnecessary risks with a car's cooling system?

All the ones I've seen look pretty much the same... Valve open/close.

In any event, ,I think the OP's problem is most likely an airlock.

Got a price last week Thursday from BMW Midrand Housing for R445 and Thermostat R510, phoned Goldwagen and got a Aluminum housing for R250 :thumbsup:

OP - remove the thermostat and do the whole boiling water expansion test. It's supposed to open up the valve by a few millimetres when it gets hot - distance varies for different thermostats - if it doesn't open at all, or too little, you know what the problem is....It sounds an old fashioned way of doing it, but it works.

Like I said before, I've never heard of cars overheating because of not having a thermostat installed, but anything's possible! I've recently replaced my Audi A3's thermostat (25 bucks at Masterparts) and that was a crap-ass job. Thermostat stuck open, which is essentially the same as no thermostat at all = taking a long time to heat up, temp goes down when running fast especially at night or cold weather.

So far I've been lucky to only have thermostats fail in this way and not the opposite.

as far as I know bmw thermostats are designed to fail in the open position for some added safety.

No oil or water mixing and i learnt from last time to stop straight away. before the light even came on. But havent driven it since, i will maybe do the bleeding of the system tonight and update u guys
