Outside temp. reading = -40deg/c

My 323i e46 is showing minus 40 deg. ouitside temp. Where do i start looking for this fault. Where do i find the sensor?

The temp sensor is located left side front under the bumper (just in front of the wheel). If the connection is loose (or gone), it will give the default -40 reading. First prize would be to get the car hooked up to diagnostics, but see if you can get another sensor and just check if it works.

As hellas said. Most the time the switch gets unplugged or contacts are bad and need cleaning. Worse case the temp sensor is faulty. I have never seen a failed module or something major as the rest of the readings would not show.
