I just bought a 2003 330I Individual and my only hassle is the temp gauge indicating the outside temp.
Can one reset this temp, mine shows -40 C.
I'll welcome any help please.

Following the below steps

Locate the sensor if its missing replace it

If its there check the connection behind it as may have come loose

If the sensor is there and connected fine its more than likely a faulty sensor

Check on the front bumper, its in the air duct for the brakes.
That's where it is for the E36, E46 cant be too different.
Look for a metal probe, 3mm in diameter, about 40mm long....

Thank you all. I found the problem with your assistance. The probe is missing only two open wires left. Taped it and I am sourcing the right part. Thanx again.

What he said. The sensor is on the passenger side behind the fog light in the plastic cover under the car. Hope this helps.

I had the same issue but someone stole the airduct... found the sensor barely hanging on the wire when I bought the car. stripped it and soldered it... all fixed :=):
