Options after Motor Plan

My MP is due to expire end of this month. I'm on 90000km's and I drive about 20'000km's a year.

E46 330d Executive 2005.

BMW have quoted me ;

R7'800 for 1 year and upto 105'000kms
R19'000 for 1 year and upto 115'000kms <- the one I really need.

I cant afford the R19K and the R7'8K seems to be the affordable option although my concern is that I will run out of mileage before the year is done.

Are there any other Options out there you guys know of that will cover my car for what "could fail" like turbo, injectors etc without breaking the bank.

I dont mind paying for my servicing or even service my own car, but the big things like control arms and engine replacement freak the  out of me if I'm caught un-covered...

I would not worry at that mileage. I would consider getting the swirl flaps removed the day the service plan expires, though. Other than that, save yourself the money. My E39 530d is now at 275500km with not a days drivetrain problems. I just ordered a control arm @R2k, however.

I actually spoke to a BMW technician mate of mine, and he says he has never seen the x30d motors come in with swirl flap issues, but the x20d's had them lots..

That is a brilliant little more that you have there, I would not go spend the 19k.

Why dont you instead of spending the 19k, open up a new account, take 1k every month, stick it in there so you have emergency funding available

If you start now, with half a year of motorplan still left, you will have 6k in the bank already..

Then, research your repairs and services decently making use of the forum, and your good to go.

Maybe thats because there are 10 x20ds for every x30d? But it is basically the exact same motor times 1.5, so no fundamental reason why the ones flaps would fail and the other not. On international forums you do read about failed x30ds because of flaps...

But I do agree about the money of the matter. Always have a backup plan (read fund) if you are out of MP.

Also did quite a bit of research on the 3.0d (i.e. asking dealers, independant guys, etc). Very little known issues locally with the 3.0d motors, as compared to the 2.0d. Hence I'm on my 2nd one :thumb:

x30d are  Sold mine with 203000km on the clock ZERO hastles ever, my Father-In-Law just sold his now with just under 200000km and also ZERO hastles. Those things are bulletproof.

Try looking at a 'Motormend' or similar policy. They cost between R3000 & R6000 (you just need one engine or gearbox replacement and the cost is warranted, cost on a 320i replacement motor from BMW R103k on one of the other threads!!) depending on the cover and age of your vehicle, they are valid for between 1 and 2 years with unlimited milage, and should reach the end of it you can renew for another two years, basically all you have to do is to ensure that your car is serviced at the right time and keep proof of doing so. They dont pay 100% of damages but up to 75% in some instances. It gives that extra little piece of mind IMO.

I wouldn't bother with motormend or motorrite, they do not cover half the cost in most cases, especially on diesels...

no issues with the 330d. my mate Louis is a workshop manager at Auto Alpina and he says they last forever...

But I would rather look at getting an extended warranty, speak to BMW they can assist there.

BTW the 320d and the 330d use totally different turbos.

Naturally, they do. But the intake is pretty much copy and paste for two more cylinders - so as far as swirl flaps are concerned, its the same...

Thats why I said 'or similar'... I know that MFC has a great one (for diesels specificaly) and even a service plan which you can buy. Part of their 'value added services'

Thanks for the responses guys. Seems like the 3.0d's are very reliable and problem free. Will heed your wise words and probably go for an extended warranty which is much cheaper.

Out of interest, I called Miway and they quoted me R193pm for the following. NB:// Fuel Injectors are not covered.

Wear and Tear items, they'll pay 50%.

Air Conditioner 3 000
Braking System 3 000
Clutch Unlimited 3 000
Cooling System 3 000
Differential (transaxle) 8 500
Drive Shafts (Prop Shafts) 3 000
Electric Sunroof 1 000
Electrical Components 3 000
Electronic Ignition 3 000
Engine 12 500
Front Wheel Drive Unit 3 000
Fuel System 3 000
Gearbox 8 500
Management System 4 000
Over-fuelling of Diesel Vehicles 3 000
Overheating 3 000
Steering 3 000
Suspension 3 000
Turbo charger 4 000
Wheel Bearings 3 000

Additional Benefits

Wear and Tear 50% of the benefit

Alternative Overnight Accommodation 1 000
Alternate Transport 1 000
Tow-in Charges (in South Africa only) 1 000

Think its worth the R193??? I know most of the items dont cover the total part+fitment cost, but it will take a chunk off the final bill..

Hi

You can also try sa warranty; pretty much the same as the i way option ; only thing is they can cover each item for more.I put it on my car. Active in 3 months only catch.

try them; better then coughing up 19k

I have been in the same position as you are...spending that crazy amount of money just don't seem worth it.

We got a 2003 320d (120k km), although I am fully aware of all the failures and faults, we could not afford the 330d, so got the next best thing. Being scary as hell if something do brake I went on a extended warranty hunt.

That motor mend /rite or whatever its called is about the cheapest option, but its cover is cheap as well. The biggest concern with this policy is that they only pay for repairs for the first issue, meaning, if your motor suck the swirl flaps in they only pay for that and not the damage it caused.

The best option IMO is the policy from bosch (just google Emperitus). The have 3 options, an essential one that covers the major six components of your car like engine, transmission, injectors, turbos, ecu and drive train. The middle option is a maintenance plan, that covers all maintenance related repairs (including the major 6 components) like brakes, clutch etc (excluding cat, shocks, tyres and that kind of stuff). It took this policy, cost like R6500 for 25000km or 15 months. Not bad me thinks. The third policy includes the first to policies and cover services, this costs about R15500 for the same period.

There payouts work on a scale depended on your car's mileage, for example in the bracket of 120k km to 140k km they pay out 90% of all the work done. Same as medical aid. The have a tow in benefit, so if you brake down anywhere in the country, they tow your car to the nearest bosch garage.

One drawback is that you must get your car serviced at there garages.

When you do decide to take there policy, you take the car to there garage, they inspect it for R400 list the faults that you must fix and if you take the policy you get your R400 back. When we bought our car we got the seller to take it for the inspection (for peace of mind) we paid the fee and got refunded after a month.

sorry for the lengthy reply, but extended warranties are very serious and people get screwed over every day for not doing enough research.
