I am thinking of selling mine and it really is pristine. It was Gregmeister's old car. 98 with 323 000km and full service history.

Will post some pics.

Yess! pics would be a blast. This car is in exeptional condition. Far better even when I had the car. It looks Brand New!

Well, a car can last as long as it is driven by somebody that cares for it. My 530d is on 293kkm, and still provides endless driving pleasure. I have seen BMWs with half the mileage that were about in half as good a condition as well... so mileage is not always a good indicator of condition (hours or total revs would be better.)

That said, when looking at an e39, I would save myself the headache and save up until I could afford the best sample I can lay my hands on. Rather save another 40k and look for something with the lowest mileage and best condition you can find. And then also make sure you have 30k in the bank for a "motorplan". There WILL be things to fix like control arm bushes, most likely shocks etc etc.

I agree. If only I knew where that 'best example' was lurking!

The best advice I can give is to take your time and don't settle. It paid off for me hugely.

Where and how did you search Adis? There are so many online sites these days! I'm keeping an eye on Autotrader, Gumtree and listed with Trovit.

I just searched gum tree for BMW e39.

Edit: Oh wait, sorry, I mis understood your question. Well, I was on the hunt for a 6 speed manual e46 330i msport which is hard to find.. S much so that any good condition examples generally are sold before advertised (as was the case with the one I bought) which meant that good ones never turned up on gumtree and autotrader.

The case is different with e39s though.. They seem to be in less demand, hence some nice ones really seem to pop up on gumtree and autotrader. The best place is actually on this forum - its likely that you'll find greatly cared for cars. That's how I found my car.

I'll be honest, that's very high mileage. Don't think I'd be comfortable with that but thanks anyway!
