Operating Temp 335

Hi guys

Still new to the 335 club, but one serious question.

Is it normal for the car to take 10 to 15 km to come up to the 120 degree mark? Is this the normal operating temp for the 335 (N54)?

I have driven other Turbo pertrol cars and diesels, never more than 5km from home to get to normal temp.

Also, I noticed that once on normal temp, you push hard through 2 or 3 gears it jumps to from 120 to 125, is all of this normal?

Thanks in advance.

Yes, and you should be very happy about that...treat it with lots of TLC.

From my experience with my car and friends - depends if it is stock or not.

My friend's tuned 135i seemed to be more prone to knocking when it was cold.

If stock, I don't think it matters much? But then again I am no expert, just going on my experience from driving the cars.

At least you have some kind of indication of the temperature.
My e90 325i does not have this luxury, therefore I have to guess when it is OK to drive with RPM's above 2500.
I really miss a temp gauge. Does the 335 measure water or oil temp?

Both oil and water if you have the performance steering wheel....like me

Also both if you have a JB4 chip installed.

Good point. Never race if the car is not @ right temps. Josh, the JB4 will keep the car at stock boost until oil & water temps are in the safe/warmed up range...this is a very cool feature.

Same as Frikkie here, my 330i doesn't have a temperature gauge, but I reckon the time it takes for the oil level meter to give a reading (which takes a long time) is roughly the time it takes for the engine to reach normal operating temperature. These engines do have a clever heat exchanger for water/oil which efficiently manages warming up and cooling of the engine. I gather the omission of a temperature gauge is also due to the operating temperature fluctuation on these NA engines - seem to remember reading something to that affect. But yes, I would say, these engines like the twin turbos are very efficient so makes sense for them to take a while to warm up - plus in reality they are physically large engines, so takes longer to warm up.

Thanks guys

But it creates problems for me, I travel from Pretoria to Edenvale everyday, it is on temp when I hit the highway, but the first 12km to the highway I always have the odd irritating GTI/ST and I cannot give it stick:argh:

I unfortunately am not able to push it while cold, so I will have to take it easy

Your gauge that you seeing in your dash is your oil temp,,,,the water temp can only be checked on the computer,,,If you start the car and the fan spins in like stage 3 then you probably have a water pump issue (pumps on these cars fail all the time as on my N54 engine ) but it will put the car into limp mode if this happens so probably not ur case.

Is the car going into limp mode ???
What oil are you using ???
have you had BMW check the oil filter ???
Is the oil cooler not blocked in the bumper ???

Some things to check and if anything the more air hitting the oil cooler should bring the temp on the dash gauge down so speed should be better not worse in my opinion

No problems (limp mode etc), I am just a big fan of not pushing the car unless on temp. The car is under M/P with 20,000 km on, I would presume that the oil would be that of BMW?

It's all normal, were just wondering why it took forever to get on temp, I took my Discovery 3 TDV6 today and it's on temp within 3 to 5 km after starting to drive off

Oil takes longer to get up to temp, in any car... The water of the x35i should also take 3-5km to get up to temp.

Sounds perfectly fine I wouldnt worry ith that low kilometers.

Ive just checked my Bently Service manual and it says it takes 10 km to get the oil up to operating tempreture.

So everything should be fine

Oil you should use is
SAE 5W - 30 or 5W - 40 High Performace Synthetic
I prefer Castrol and if the car is under motorplan they will be using this oil anyway

So happy miles

I like your thinking, I am in a very similar mindset, I can trash it every morning and afternoon, before 100k hit's, BMW will replace my engine and then start to take it easy on cold start ups on the second or third mototr:rollsmile:
