Older BMW telephones

need some advise, the older BMW car phones:
- do they still work in this country?
- has somebody got them in they car functional?
- can it possibly be converted to work?
- if it can be converted who could do that typoe of work?

Thinking the e34 / e36 1992-1996 type models, any feedback would be appriociated. Thinking of buying one to fit in my car, pointless if it can not make calls.

If this helps, I seen a guy talking on one the other day in his BMW, which means it does work. Other than that I have no clue.

Not too sure about the E34 but the E39 telephones work. I had a '98 528 and the phone worked when I used the sim slot in the boot, but my '00 540 worked with the sim slot in the car, apparently it had something to do with the GSM receiver not made for SA.

The E46 M3 one works 100%, we have an E34 one but I think its busted. The problem is that using a car telephone is illegal unless you use the speakerphone setting which makes them redundant IMO. Rather fit a tray which is is usable.

hmmm the phone for a concourse car is just such a nice round off, finishing touch....would be for an e34 M5 had the phone in the centre console on the left

I think Raybimmer fiddled with his in his E34, but don't know if he ever got it working. I also thought it would be a nice touch to round off my car... someday.

Me and my brother was joking that when you get to a set of lights and a pretty woman stops next to you that you should pick up the phone and mime "Call Me". hehe...

Just argue that it's a land line :mmm:

I bet you get away with it... more than once :):)

Many years ago I had an old Motorola 8700 cell phone which actually was standard equipment with some BMW's back then, so it actually was branded as BMW too...

Adi I got mine working in the e34 540i individual . As they came out with the phone I was curious to see if it worked . There is the unit in the boot behind the cd changer . A complete sim card fits in there . There is also a slot under the phone cradle , have never tried a sim card in this one though .
I can take pics the weekend if you like . You may have to get the mounting bracket and fit it to your boot .

Don't see why it wouldn't work, unless the phone itself is stuffed.
I just had to change sim cards because of RICA BS and mines working 100s. E39 though, not sure how much major difference there is between the two 5 series.
