So... Gooday All.

Ive been looking at the technological advancements that BMW has added to our cars in the last 30 years... And I like! It got me thinking: Whats to stop me from adding a few features to my tired old E36 316i? Why not a "flat tyre detection system", or BMW Navigation... Active Restraints, Airbags...

And then I got thinking: Someone must have tried some of this stuff before.
So, Im gonna start and if you have any input, feel free to drop your opinion, advice or encouragement... By the end of this, I wanna have one of the most advanced E36s in the world... or Im gonna have a piece of junk. Either way, Its gonna be different.

To start off, I have a set of wheels from an E92 as well as a perfectly preserved set of seats, ex E90. I have access to many parts...

On your marks, get set: VOETSEK! :smilebounce:

Day 1. Seat inspection, cleaning, measurements. So, I dragged the seats out of their little hiding place. Found a few issues already. The rails are different so I'm gonna have to do some fabrication. Further, the backrest of the back seat is torn... As in the stitching has come apart where the sun has dried the leather. I cleaned it, gave it a good rubbing rub and left it alone. Also, the headrests have activated... This is probably a result of a rear end smack... A little research has pointed me at the stealer. I have to buy new mechanisms for the headrests. I'm thinking, since I AM gonna strip the ENTIRE loom from an E90, I may as well get the headrests right before I install. About the rails: 1 is missing. Once I strip out my own grey seats and install these black ones, I'll try to modify my old rail to fit... More on that once I start that monster sub-project. Better news: the wheels from the E92 fit like gloves, but the ride quality... Atrocious! It's as if Im running on solid wheels... All over the road. That said, they're BEAUTIFUL, so I'm keeping them. Runflats... I suppose I'll have to check and modify the suspension on the E36 to accomodate the lack of flex on the runflats.
One more thing: I rode around looking at a few vehicles in scrapyards. I've added a few wants: lighting, stop start, lane monitoring, headlamp cleaning, height adjustment, retractable towbar, led head and taillamps, that beautiful f series key... It's hunting time!!

JEsus!

Peeps, Ill be pushing up my FIRST pics this weekend. Starting with the seats and rail fabrication. Im still collecting stuff I need.

Engine swap: As much as Id LOVE the idea, I dont have the FUNDS to support that... Besides, I actually love the surprise my M40B16 gives everytime I go full throttle...

It's more likely that it's an m40b18. South African 316i models (not sure if all) were actually 1.8l.

Looking forward to this:thumbs:

I'm sorry but I'll be that guy. You're wasting your time and your money.

By the time you've completed your wants you're going to have a vehicle worth nothing. When you could have gone out and about an F series with all your gadgets you're wanting.

Cool the seats and wheels. Nice well done. Quick and easy. Quick adjustment of the rails. Job done.

Now you're wanting to fit headlights and taillights? From an F series... wtf. Do yourself a favour and fit a set of projectors and xenon bulbs etc to your current housing.

Lane detection? Do you even remotely know how you're going to achieve this? It would be a headache retrofitting it to a vehicle actually capable never mind an E36...

I'm all for upgrades and modding. But you're head is so far in the clouds...

One headlight will cost more than your e36 is worth, even with a full tank of gas.

Dont even ask what the ECU for them costs...

Let the man build what he wants.

If he takes the time to retrofit modern systems to the car, then more power to him.

OP, check out Project Binky on YouTube, if for no other reason than to prove that if you have the time/passion (and a welding machine), there are alot of possibilities

So many ideas you have. I am really interested to see what your next move is. For me wiring is the devil

You forgot experience and know-how. Considering the project binky guys are engineers with 50 years experience. Not just some guy with an unrealistic dream and a welder.

And never mind that fact they have a shop fully kitted for fabrication. Not just a R2000 welder from macro.
