So a 6speed auto box will be a lot cheaper than the the conversion? I'm very tempted to do the conversion, but a few years from now when I want to sell I'm going to have trouble. How does the gear ratios differ between the 5 & 6 speed auto?

ok now you guys have me confused.

I do not want to sell the car anytime soon. I would like to keep it and maybe in a year or so buy a little polo or something to run around with and keep the 330i as my toy(after i install a T66 turbo lol)

Must i drop the autobox in or do the manual conversion. What is going to cost me less money in the long run, and which box will be better

Problem with a scrapyard box is you do not know in what state it is, and you could drive 150km and it could go again, or you could do 150,000km without a whipser.

Resale value will not be effected that much, as resale value is already in the tank, meaning the car is worth very little right now, so you wont loose much additional, you dont even need to declare the swap,

In the long run, you need to decide, if you want to increase your grin factor, go with the manual,

Ok Forsdicks BMW said that it could be an oil leak.

They said i must bring the car so they do replace the oil flush the coolant and reprogram the gearbox

they say i have a 50/50 chance of it being fixed

Risk is that its going to cost R3k

Now do i do it or not?

On the 50% chance that it doesn't solve your problems (and seeing BMW's service history of late, it probably won't), do you want to add a completely pointless R3000 to manual gearbox swap, that'll give you less problems and end up costing you less in future? :mmm:

Jack your car up, and look at the gearbox, do you see any oil marks on the box or oil coming out at all.

It could be a oil leak, you could have a 50/50 chance,

Try this, if the car is driving, take it to ZF close to the airport, have them diagnose the box, they will do a better job then the dealer and have better equipment.

If the box was low on oil it may have done other damange, how many Km's is on the car ?

The car has about 170k on the clock.

Yeah think im gonna jack up the car tonight and see if there is any leak, but i doubt it as i would have seen oil on my garage floor

Ye i think me saving 3k for the manual swop is the best thing to do

What do you guys suggest, 5 speed or 6 speed

For a 330i without changing the diff? Depends how much highway you do. 5 if you do a lot, 6 if you don't.

Well i do alot of town driving. But also some highway

What box will be better do you think?

Wont the 5 speed give the motor some more torque aka acceleration

If I'm not mistaken, the first 2 or 3 gears of the 6-speed are at a higher ratio than the 5-speed. You've got an automatic, which use higher diff ratio's, and coupled with a 6-speed might make your car a bit too rev-happy (but accelerate like hell), hence not a good idea for highway use.
