But then again, selling with a broken (or NO gearbox) will knock off MORE that 15k off the price that you might get...

There is a reason why he offer the 2 year gaurentee, cause it is not going to break, Clutch's maybe... but you have to be really special to break those box's

Yeah and St.L is know for being "special" at times!
Auto is the best deal for peak traffic but doesn't compare to a manual shifting in a 330!

Dude, for 16500 I would do the swop. Mine have had three dme's (gearbox control units) in it in the last 2 months, oil change, wiring harness checked & even the ignition board changed & still no joy. They ordered a reconditioned valve body this morning, might be here on Thursday. There's nothing else they can change on my tranny, so hopefully this fixes the issue.

In the meantime, I'm driving an auto golf 4, courtesy from BMW.

1lum1nat1, there is still the gearbox clutches that can be done, as well as the Torque converter, gearbox oil pressure pump, internal sensors, and some other bits as well, they havnt begun to play :)

But thats why I think the guys charge 15k to cover for what else could go wrong/having to take the box in/out 5 times all of those good things, but yes I agree with you, manual swap, but good luck in sorting out your box and I hope they do it soon.

The only thing that destroys a manual box is torque overload (spinning the crap out of it on a dirt road is a good example), running out of oil/oil leak, manufacturing defect, or breakage of clips that keep the gears in place, but thats unlikely.

And while clutches are annoying in traffic, your fine german luxury car has got a sliky smooth box, hyraulically assisted clutch pedal, try driving a Mk1 Golf in traffic and see how that one works out for you

I can do an auto-to-manual 6spd conversion for R14 000. I will use a 6spd box from a late model E90, so it should be low mileage. The wiring is the hard bit but I should figure it out.

dudes, FFS man, 16K is way too much for a manual conversion. if you do it yourself or with help from some friends and make a bit of effort to find the right parts at the right prices you would be much better off. geezlike.
on the other hand, according to ZF technicians, the moment the gearbox starts humming, its fooked. so you'll prolly spend more money fixing the auto box. But, if you want to sell the car, it might be a better idea to drop in a replacement box, they should be VERY plentifull at scrapyards and engineden and such, and they will be MUCH cheaper. changeing the auto box is pretty much a drag and drop situation. can be done in half a days work if u have a friend handy.

clutchy out.
